Full Text FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to a novel paint and washable distemper-
PRIOR ART
Plastic paints known presently in the art include emulsions, eg. acrylic emulsions, polyurethane emulsions and paints, etc- but which make use of virgin raw materials, hence are expensive, also do not contribute to waste recycling and consequent reduction in sol id waste pollution.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
An object of this invention is to propose a novel paint/distemper
and a process for the preparation thereof.
Another object of this invention is to propose a novel paint/
distemper and a process for the preparation thereof which is
corrosion-resistant.
Yet another object of this invention is to propose a novel paint/
distemper and a process for the preparation thereof which does
not require any expensive machinery for the manufacture thereof.
A further object of this invention is to propose a novel paint/
distemper and a process for the preparation thereof which can be
applied by brushing or spraying.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will be more
apparent from the ensuing description.
HRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
According to this invention, there is provided a paint/distemper comprising 5 to 1ø% w/v of polymer, 3 to 7% w/v of a covering base, ø.5 to 154 w/v of a pigment and 3 to 1ø % w/v of a drying
1

time controlling agent, the balance being made up by a solvent.
In accordance with this invention, the paint/distemper comprises 5 to 10% w/v of polymer, the polymer solution forms a colourless, thin, transparent, strongly adherent coating on the surface. The polymer used for the purpose is expanded polystyrene, ie. thermo-coal. The polymer solution forms a colourless, thin, transparent, strongly adherent coating on the surface applied, which (the surface) can be cement plastered (time washed or not) masonry wood or metal. The solution of the polymer is prepared \n an organic solvent, such as aromatic hydrocarbons, like benzene, toluene, xylene, etc. and chlorinated hydrocarbons, like tetra-chloroethylene (Westrol), trichloroethylene, chloroform, carbon tetrachlonde and the like.
The paint/distemper further comprises 3 to 1% w/v of a covering base selected from white lead 1ithopone, anatalse, rutile, baryta, etc.. The base imparts corrosion-resistant properties.
The paint/distemper comprises ø.5 to 1% w/v of a pigment, dye or lake. The pigment/dye/1ake is hydrophobic, oi1-dispersible and can form a suspension in the Oil. Mixing oil soluble dyes with the polymer solution can give coloured, transparent, washable distempers. Mixing a fluorescent dye will give a fluorescent coating. Incorporating mother of pearl/mica dust in the composition will give an lrridiscent finish.
The paint/distemper further comprises 3 to 10% w/v of a drying time control1ing agent, such as 1inseed oil, gilsomte or tung oil. The drying time of the paint/distemper (from less than 5
2

mins. to 1 hr.) can be controlled by varying the 'drying agent' loading.
The process consists in cold mixing of the polymer solution, covering base, pigment and drying time control1ing agent. A stirred tank reactor or continuous feed mixer can be used. A disintegrator/ball/coltoil/mill can be used to attain homogeneity of the mix.
The paint/distemper has a good coverage (4 to 6 m2/1 ) and both coverage and coating thickness (0.1 to 0.3 min) can be control led by varying the polymer loading.
The invention will now be explained in greater detail with the help of the fo11 owing non-1imiting example.
EXAMPLE
A typical formulation is prepared using the following ingredients :
1. Polymer - 7 gms. in 8ø,2 gms. solvent; 11- Covering base - 5 gms.; 333. Pigment - ø.8 gm.; iv- Drying time controlling agent - 7 gms.
The above ingredients are subjected to cold mixing under stirring at room temperature and ordinary pressure to obtain the paint/ distemper compos11ion.
