Title of Invention | A PROCESS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF AN INORGANIC-ORGANIC COMPOSITE MEMBRANE |
---|---|
Abstract | A process for the manufacture of an inorganic- organic composite membrane comprising the steps of selecting a solution from (1) polyvinyl alcohol in the range of 30 wt. % to 40 wt.% in 1 litre of water (2) adding to the selected solution 20 wt.% to 40 wt.% of the said selected solution an inorganic precursor selected from silica, titania, zirconiato obtain a clear liquid; adding to the said liquid 20 wt.% to 50 wt.% polyoxometalates (including phosphomolybdie acid, phosphotungstic acid, silicomolybdic acid, silicotungstic acid, phosphomolybdovanadic acid) and refluxing the resultant at a temperature between SO degree C and 70 degree C for 4 to 12 hours to obtain a clear viscous gel, subsequently converted in a known way into the said composite membrane. |
Full Text | This invention therefore proposes a process for the manufacture of an inorganic-organic membrane having the necessary flexibility, stability by reason of its organic content, stability by reason of its inorganic content and an active component polyoxometalate Hie process for the manufacture of an inorganic-organic composite membrane, according to this invention, comprises the steps of selecting a solution from (1) polyvinyl alcohol in the range of 30 wt% to 40 wt% in 1 litre of water (2) adding to the selected solution 20 wt% to 40 wt% of the said selected solution an inorganic precursor selected from silica, titania, zirconiato obtain a clear liquid; adding to the said liquid 20 wt% to 50wt% polyoxometalates (including phosphomolybdic acid, phosphotungsttc acid, silicomolybdic acid, silicotungstic acid phoshomolybdovanadic acid) and refluxing the resultant at a temperature between 50 deg C and 70 deg C for 4 to 12 hours, to obtain a clear viscous gel, subsequently converted in a known way into the said composite membrane. EXAMPLE 38 gms of PVA is dissolved in 1000 ml of water and to this 62.3 ml of tetraethyl orthosilicate was added and refluxed for 30 minutes to obtain a clear liquid To the above mixture 25 gm of silicotungstic acid was added and refluxed at 70 deg. C for 6 hours to obtain a clear viscous gel. Hie gel is coated cm to a glass plate and after drying, is removed from the said plate to obtain the said membrane. We Claim: 1.A process for the manuftcture of an inorganic-ofganic composite membrane comprising the steps of selecting a solution from (1) polyvinyl alcohol in the range of 30 wt% to 40 wttt in 1 litre of water (2) adding to the selected solution 20 wt% to 40 wt% of the said selected solution an inorganic precursor selected from silica, titania, zirconia to obtain a clear liquid; adding to die said liquid 20 wtH to 50wtH potyoxometalates (including phosphomolybdic acid, phospbotungstic acid, silioomolybdic acid, silicotungstic acid pboibomolybdovanadic acid) and refluxing die resultant at a temperature between 50 deg C and 70 deg C for 4 to 12 hours, to obtain a clear viscous gel, subsequently converted in a known way into the said composite membrane. 2.The process as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the inorganic substance is tetraethyl orthosilicate. 3.A process for the manuftcture of a inorganic-organic composite membrane substantially as herein described and illustrated by he Example. 4.An inorganic-organic composite membrane whenever manufactured in accordance with the preceding Claims. |
