Abstract | A method ormanufacture of a metal article having a substantially corrosion free surface comprising the steps of degreasing the article by vapour, dip or spray degreasing~ grit blasting the degreased surface with steel shots~ coating the surface with molten aluminium powder by spraying the same on the said surface up to a thickness of 50 microns, said molten alum inium being prepared by melting alum inium in wire form; powder coating the surface up to 30-40 microns with silicon based powder; and curing the said surface. |
Full Text | This invention relates to a method of manufacture of a metal article having a substantially corrosion free surface Motor vehicles fitted with fossil fuel engines are provided with exhaust mufflers to reduce the noise. The external surface of these mufflers, especially those for two wheelers, are usually painted or chrome plated for aesthetic appeal and for preventing corrosion. However the high temperature to which the interior of the muffler is exposed eventually leads to the paint or plating peeling off and results in corrosion of the . surface. The known methods of preventing corrosion by the use of black chrome plating or painting with heat resistant black paint are expensive, require more cyclic time and lead to the formation of toxic chemicals as by products, causing environmental hazards. This invention therefore proposes a method by which metal articles having a substantially corrosion free surfaces can be manufactured, economically and effectively, without giving rise to toxic waste. The method of manufacture of a metal article having a substantially corrosion free surface, according to this invention, comprises the steps of degreasing the article by vapour, dip or spray degreasing; grit blasting the degreased surface with steel shots; characterised by coating the surface with molten aluminium by spraying the same on the said surface up to a thickness of 50 microns, said molten aluminium being prepared by melting aluminium in wire form ; powder coating the surface up to 30-40 microns with silicon based powder; and curing the said surface. The preferred range of thickness of the aluminium coating is up to 50 microns and that of the powder coating is 30-40 microns. This invention will now be further described by reference to an Example as illustrative of its scope. EXAMPLE The surface of the article to be manufactured is degreased by a solvent emulsion cleaner for 3 _4-removing all types of oil and grease. The degreasing operation is conveniently carried out in a washing machine. The degreased surface is then grit blasted using steel shots of 0.5 mm size. These shots are spherical heat treated (50 HRc). The surface is then coated with molten aluminium using arc spraying and aluminium wire (99 % purity), by which aluminium continuously melts, gets atomised and blown on to the surface of the article by compressed air to form a coating of 45 microns. Next, the aluminium coated surface is further powder coated with silicon based powder which withstands a temperature of 550 deg., the thickness of such coating being 30 microns. The surface of the article so obtained is then cured In a conveyor type oven or in a batch type oven. The terms and expressions herein are of description and not of limitation, there being no intention to exclude any equivalents of the features illustrated and described, but it is understood that various other ways of carrying out the said method are possible without departing from the scope and ambit of this invention. We Claim; 1. A method of manufacture of a metal article having a substantially corrosion free surface comprising the steps of degreasing the article by vapour, dip or spray degreasing; grit blasting the degreased surface with steel shots; characterised by coating the surface with molten aluminium by spraying the same on the said surface up to a thickness of 50 microns, said molten aluminium being prepared by melting aluminium in wire form ; powder coating the surface up to 3040 microns with silicon based powder and curing the said surface. 2. A method as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the molten aluminium is sprayed by compressed air. 3. A method as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2 wherein the curing is carried out in a conveyor type oven. 4. A method as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2 wherein the curing is carried out in a batch type oven. 5. A method of manufacture of a metal article having a sub.stantially corrosion free surface substantially as herein described with reference to, and as illustrated by, the Example. 6. A metal article having a substantially corrosion free surface whenever manufactured by a method as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims.
