Title of Invention

AN IMPROVED DRAFTING ZONE IN TEXTILE MACHINERY FOR REDUCING HAIR FORMATION IN YARN

Abstract This invention relates to arl improved drafting zorle in textile machinery to reduce hair formation on yarn. At least one apron of the drafting zone is provided with plurality of perforations. These perforations are in alignment with suction mearls for removing short fibre lengths present in the drafted material during drafting operatiorls which otherwise contribute to irl hair formation on the surface of the processed yarn.

This invention relates to an improved drafting zone in textile machinery for reducing hair formation in yarn.
One of the important factors that determine the quality of yarn is its smooth exterior and yarn with minimum surface hair is preferred in various textile processing steps. For instance smoother yarn with minimum hair improves the efficiency of warping, weaving and knitting machines. Use of smooth yarn with minimum hair formation results in smooth and uniform stitching. Fabrics woven out of smooth yarn with minimum surface hair are of better texture and can be processed and dyed more effectively.
It is therefore obvious that the hair formation is to be minimised at the initial processing stage itself and it is the object of this invention to reduce the tendency of hair formation or the yarn at the drafting stage.
Roving to be drafted enters the drafting zone between the aprons and is drafted by the differential speeds between the back and front rollers of the machine. Actual drafting takes place between the aprons. The top and the bottom aprons provide sufficient pressure to hold the moving roving and at the same time giving sufficient freedom to slip and get drafted. At the entry point of the drafting zone, the roving has a large width and as it gets drafted, the width of the fibre assembly becomes smaller and smaller and at the point of exit, it reaches the necessary width required for the proposed yarn count.

Reduction of width of the fibre assembly takes place in the drafting zone which is very short in length. Because of the short distance, it travels during the drafting process, at least a portion of the fibre tends to be oriented away from the direction of drafted material movement. These deflected fibres tend to protrude from the contour of the drafted material. During further processing of the drafted material these protruded fibres emerge as fine hair on the body of the processed yarn.
This invention is aimed at reducing the hairness of yarn by improving the alignment of the material at the drafting zone of the textile machine and to minimise the fibre deflection by removing the non aligned material at the drafting stage,
Accordingly the present invention provides an improved drafting zone in textile machinery for reducing hair formation in yarn, and comprises of a top apron and a bottom apron, at least one of the said aprons being provided with plurality of perforations and atleast one suction means aligning with the said perforations.
The perforations may be spaced and this spacing may depend on the speed of the drafting, stapale length, count of the yarn and other factors.
Conventionally a solid or rigid nose bar supports the bottom apron. A hollow nose bar communicating with the

perforations in the apron may function as the suction means by sucking air and the deflected fibres, from the roving during the drafting process. Any conventional sucking means such as, a pipe located below the drafting zone also will effectively remove shorter fibres. Removal of shorter fibres from the drafted yarn results in the reduction of hair formation during the twisting step which follows the drafting step.
This invention will now be described with reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 represents the conventional drafting zone; Figure 2 represents the improved drafting zone.
Roving to be drafted enters at point E and gets
delivered at point D. T and B represent the top and bottom
aprons and N is the rigid nose bar that supports the bottom
apron.
The improvement of the existing arrangement is represented by Figure 2 wherein T, B, N, E and D represent the components as described in Figure 1. The bottom apron is provided with a plurality of perforations shown by the letter P. Suction means is represented by the letter 0 and in the specific embodiment shown in Figure 2 the suction means is an opening or hollow provided in the support means N of the bottom means. The opening is in alignment with the perforations on the bottom apron.

Air stream provided during roller movements of the drafting operation moves in the direction of drafting. Small fibres which may protrude from the drafted yarn are sucked out and are lodged in the suction means which may periodically be cleaned.
Obvious equivalents known to persons skilled in the art are within the scope of this invention claimed in the appended claims.

WE CLAIM:
