Abstract | An automatic device for boost charging the battery of an automobile during deceleration comprising first means for sensing the rpm of the engine of the automobile; second means for receiving the output of the first means and determining whether or not deceleration is taking place, said second means being connected to lighting and charging coils of the magneto or dynamo of the engine and, during deceleration periods, switching the lighting coil in parallel with the charging coil, to boost charge the battery of the automobi1e, during such periods. |
Full Text | This invention relates to an automatic device for boost charging the battery of an automobile while decelerating. Conventionally, during deceleration periods of an automobile, the energy output from the engine during such periods is dissipated in slowing down or braking the vehicle - This invention, therefore, proposes to usefully employ such energy during deceleration periods of the automobile for boost charging the battery of the vehicle, whereby substantially the entire energy from the magneto or dynamo of the engine is supplied to the battery during deceleration periods. The device proposed herein is intended for use in the day time when the lighting coil is usually not operated* However the said device also operates at any other time as long as the lighting coil is not operated. The automatic device, according to this invention, for boost charging the battery of an automobile during deceleration periods comprises first means for sensing the rpm of the engine of the automobile 5 second means for receiving the output of the first means and determining whether or not deceleration is taking place, said second means being connected to lighting and charging coils of the magneto or dynamo of the engine and, during deceleration periods, switching the lighting coil in parallel with the charging coil, to boost charge the battery of the automobile, during such periods. This invention will now be described wi th reference to the single Figure in the accompanying drawings which i1lustrate, by way of example, and not by way of limitation, the circuitry of one of various possible embodiments of the device proposed herein. Conventionally, the charging coil of the magneto M charges the battery B of the vehicle. The lighting coi1 of the magneto independently supplies the 1ighting load.- First means for sensing the rpm of the engine of the automobile are exemplified in the said embodiment by the pulsar coi1 P or charging coi1 C of the magneto. The output of the pulsar coil or charging coil is received by second means which determine whether the vehicle is decelerating or not, the second means being exemplified by the deceleration sensing and switching circuitry D. If the vehicle is in fact decelerating, the second means connected to the charging coil C and to the lighting coil L, switches on the lighting coil in parallel with the charging coil. Since the charging coil is already connected to the battery, switching on the lighting coil in parallel with the charging coil transmits substantially the entire energy of the magneto to the battery, thereby utilizing the energy available during the deceleration periods to boost charge the battery instead of wasting such energy in a braking action or in slowing down the vehicle M If, however, after a deceleration period^ the engine is made to accelerate or run at a constant speed, the deceleration sensing circuit, determining that there is no deceleration taking place, switches off the connection between the charging and lighting coils, to bring such coils into normal operation- It may be noted that the deceleration which is taken into consideration is the deceleration of the engine when the magneto is in operation; and not the dece1 ation of the vehicle as such as, for instance, when the vehicle may be moving with the engine switched off. The terms and expressions in this specification are of description and not of limitation there being no intention in the use of such terms and expressions of excluding any equivalent© of the features i1lustrated and described, but it is understood that various other embodiments of the device proposed herein are possible without departing from the scope and ambit of this invention. We Claims 1. An automatic device for boost charging the battery of an automobi1e during deceleration comprising first means for ensign the rpm of the engine of the automobile second means for receiving the output of the first means and determining whether or not deceleration is taking place, said second means being connected to lighting and charging coils of the magneto or dynamo of the engine and, during deceleration periods, switching the lighting coil in parallel with the charging coil, to boost charge the battery of the automobile, during such periods. 2« An automatic device as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the first means comprise the pulsar coil of the automobile» 3- An automatic device as claimed in Claim i wherein the first means comprise the charging coil of the automobile« 4« An automatic device as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims wherein the second means comprise a deceleration sensing and switching circuit» 5. An automatic device for boost charging the battery of an automobile during deceleration substantially as herein described with reference to, and illustrated, in the accompanying drawings. |
