Title of Invention | GUPTA'' OROPHARYNGEAL DEVICE FOR TEE PROBE INSERTION |
---|---|
Abstract | An oropharyngeal device is required for insertion of Transoesophageal probe and endoscopes in intubated patients. The device consists of two limbs of unequal lengths attached to a handle. The anterior limb can move over the serrated portion of the handle to adjust the space required for inserting the probes, endoscopes and nasogastric tubes. This device provides unobstructed passage to Transoesophageal probes, Endoscopes,Nasogastric tubes, and Bronchoscopes. |
Full Text | Complete Specifications Title: Oropharyngeal device for TEE probe insertion This invention is for facilitating insertion of Transoesophageal probes and endoscopes in intubated patients During surgical procedure, insertion of Transoesophageal probe is often challenging and may lead to damage to the probe or to oral cavity. Laryngoscope is sometimes employed to help in passage of probe, but manipulation of laryngoscope is difficult due to surgical drapes and limited access to the oral cavity. The main purpose for which laryngoscope is used is intubation only and this may not be the appropriate use .The handle of laryngoscope goes beyond the drapes into the surgical field when used for inserting the probe. Some oropharyngeal airways have been designed for insertion of endoscopes only. It may be difficult to use them for TEE probe. All these airway have fixed wide opening, making them difficult to insert and it is more difficult to manipulate probe with these airways. These problems are overcome by the present invention designed specifically for insertion of TEE probes in intubated patients during surgery. A short handle shall help in manipulation of the new device for easy passage of the probe. The two limbs of the device are close together during insertion of device and can be separated once the device is positioned .Therefore, positioning the device will not be traumatic and desired separation can be achieved. Different lengths of the two limbs shall ensure proper positioning. The two limbs are only connected on the left side on the handle. They are not joined on right side, leaving space for endotracheal tube. Optional features that may be added are the light source (fibreoptic should be preffered) at the end of the longer anterior limb for better visualization. This device can be further used in inserting endoscopes and nasogastric tubes in intubated patients. Oral Fiberoptic bronchoscopy in difficult airway patients can be performed for orotracheal intubation as unobstructed passage becomes available with this device in place. The oropharyngeal device can be made of stainless steel or moulded plastic. To assist with understanding the invention, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, which describe the invention. Brief Description of the drawings Figure 1 shows the design of the oropharyngeal device. The two limbs of unequal lengths and the handle attached to the anterior limb. Figure 2 shows the same device as viewed from the top, the two limbs being connected to each other superiorly only over the handle. Detailed description of the preferred embodiments: Referring to Figure 1 can be seen that the handle is short( 8 cm)and divided into 2 portions- The smooth surface followed by serrations, covering a distance of 3 cm. Over the serrated portion is attached anterior limb, which moves over serrations with the help of screw at the left end.The serrations are directed forwards so that the anterior limb locks after positioning. The rotating screw is designed to consist of 2 columns, that travel over serrations in a clockwise rotation to open the device for insertion of TEE probe. The teeth of serrations fit in the slot between the 2 columns of the rotating screw. At the end of handle is attached the short posterior limb that does not move forward or backward. The right side of the device is open in order to accommodate endotracheal tube. Claim I claim , 1. An oropharyngeal device Gupta oropharyngeal device, which comprise of two limbs attached to a handle for insertion of Transoesophageal probes, endoscopes and nasogastric tubes in intubated patients. 2. The oropharyngeal device 1 wherein the anterior limb can move over the handle to open the oral cavity for a convenient space in the oral cavity for insertion of the probe. 3. The oropharyngeal device in claim 2 has serrations on the handle on which the rotator screw attached to the anterior limb travels to lock the device at desired position. 4. The oropharyngeal device in claim 3 has two limbs of unequal lengths for proper positioning inside the propharynx. 5.The oropharyngeal device in claim 4 has a light source and a bulb incorporated in the anterior limb. 6.The oropharyngeal device in claim 4 is made of metal or plastic. 7. The oropharyngeal device substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing 5 |
