Title of Invention | A DEVICE FOR SECURELY FASTENING A GEARBOX BODY TO THE FLANGE OF A VALVE BODY |
---|---|
Abstract | A device for securely fastening a gearbox body to the flange of a valve body, comprises a fast threaded bole provided on the gearbox body and a second through hole on the flange of the valve body, said holes, being aligned with respect to each other to, receive a threaded stud, threadedly engageable with, the threaded hole on the gearbox body and passing through the drilled hole on the flange, characterized in that-thee stud is provided with a nut having a tapered head; and the mouth ofthe second hole is chamfered, whereby the said nut upon being tightened, is wedged into the said mouth, to securely fasten the gearbox body to the valve body. |
Full Text | This invention relates to a device for securely fastening a gearbox body to the flange of a valve body. More particularly, though not exclusively, this invention relates to a device for securely fastening a gearbox body to the body of a quarter turn valve, that is to say, a valve with a rotating plug and stem which controls the movement of the plug. Torque to the stem is transmitted by a gearbox which is operated by a hand wheel or motor. One of the conventional devices for fastening the gearbox body to the flange of the valve body is by a stud boh, spring washer and nut. In this case, when the gearbox transmits the torque to the stem of the valve, there is a tendency after a few operations for the fastening device to loosen and, consequently, cause arrangement to shift out of place. The invention therefore proposes a device which prevents the relative shift between the gearbox and the valve body, by fastening the same together more securely than possible with the known arrangement. The device for securely fastening a gearbox body to a valve body, according to this invention, comprises a first threaded hole provided on the gearbox body and a second through hole on the flange of the valve body, said holes being aligned with respect to each other to receive a threaded stud threadedly engageable with, the threaded hole on the gearbox body and passing through the 2 drilled hole in the flange of the valve body, characterised in that the stud is provided with a nut having a tapered head; and the mouth of the second hole chamfered, whereby the said nut, upon being tightened, is wedged into the said mouth, to securely fasten the gearbox body to the valve body. Reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a known form of a fastening device and by way of example, and not by way of limitation, one of various possible embodiments of the device proposed herein, Fig. 1 illustrating a known form of fastening device employed for fastening the gearbox body to the flange of the valve body. Fig.2 illustrating an embodiment of the device proposed herein indicated by the circled portion Fig. 3 illustrating an enlarged view of the circled portion shown in Fig.2 As already stated above, one of the conventional devices (Fig. 1) for fastening the gearbox body 1 to the flange 2 of the valve body 3 is a stud bolt 4 (engageable with the threaded holes 5 in the gearbox body 1 and passing through the drilled holes 6 in the flange 2 of the valve body 3) and nut 7. The flange 2 is provided with spot facing at 8 for nut seating. In this arrangement, whenever the gearbox transmits a torque to the stem of the valve, for rotating the stem, there is a tendency, for the stud to loosen, after a few operations and consequently, for the arrangement to shift from its original position, thereby lowering the working efficiency. In the device proposed herein (vide embodiments exemplified Figs.2 and 3) a first threaded hole HI is provided on the gear box body G and a second through drilled hole H2 on the flange F of the valve body V. These holes are aligned with respect to each other to receive a threaded stud S threadedly engageable with said threaded hole HI & passing through the drilled hole H2. The stud S is provided with a nut N having a tapered head T. Furthermore, the mouth M of the second hole H2 is chamfered at C whereby the said nut N, upon being tightened, is wedged into the said mouth M, to securely fasten the gear box body G to the valve body V. The movement of the tapered head T of the nut N against the chamfer C of the mouth M brings about the wedging action, to securely fasten the gearbox body G to the valve body V. Preferably, the tapered head T of the nut N is frusto-conical in shape. The terms and expressions in this specification are of exemplification and not of limitation, since various other embodiments of the device proposed herein are possible without departing from the scope and ambit of this invention. f We Claim: 1. A device for securely fastening a gearbox body to the flange of a valve body, comprising a first threaded hole provided on the gearbox body and a second through hole on the flange of the valve body, said holes being aligned with respect to each other to receive a threaded stud threadedly engageable with the threaded hole on the gearbox body and passing through the drilled hole on the flange, characterized in that the stud is provided with a nut having tapered hea,d; and the mouth of the second hole is chamfered, whereby the said nut, upon being tightened , is wedged into the said mouth, to securely fasten the gearbox body to the valve body. 2. A device as caimed in Claim 1 wherein the tapered head of the nut is frusto-cinicall. 3. A device for securely fastening a gearbox body to the flange of a valve body, substantially as herein described with referencie to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing. |
