Title of Invention | "A PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF YARN/FABRIC (TEXTILE MATERIAL) HAVING ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION/PROTECTION AND FLAME RESISTANT PROPERTIES" |
---|---|
Abstract | This invention relates to a process for the preparation of yarn/fabric (textile material) having ultraviolet radiation/protection and flame resistant properties. According to the process the yarn/fabric is prepared from natural coloured cotton or blends of natural coloured cotton with other natural and synthetic fibres. The yarn/fabric so prepared is treated with 0.1-30% by weight of alkalis/salts at a temperature of 40-100°C. The treated yarn/fabric is subjected to the steps of washing followed by drying in vaccum oven so as to obtain said yarn/fabric (textile material). |
Full Text | This invention relates to a process for the preparation of a yarn/fabric (textile material) having ultraviolet radiation/protection and flame resistant properties. The yarn/fabric (textile material) is useful for the manufacturing caps, upholstery, garments, umbrella, gown and other apparels to protect the user from ultraviolet radiation and fire. The textile material can also be used for manufacturing tents, mattresses, pillows etc. In the prior art it is known to decrease ultraviolet transmissions through clothing by introduction of certain compounds into or onto textile or apparel fabrics. For this purpose reference is made to U.S. Patent no. 4,857,305 and U.K. patent no. 889292. Further yarns, blend of yams and, fabrics having ultraviolet radiation properties have been provided in the prior art and such technique is taught in the U.S. patent no. 4861651. There are some disadvantages associated with the process and fabric as such known in the prior art. One of the main disadvantage is that the conventional fabric permit the transmission of relatively high levels of ultraviolet radiations. Another disadvantage is that it is costly to produce such fabrics. Still another disadvantage associated with the prior art is that the ultraviolet absorption/protection fire resistant properties developed in the fabrics are not long lasting and stable. Therefore the main object of the present invention is to provide a process for the manufacture of yarn/fabric having ultraviolet radiation absorption/protection and flame resistant properties. Another object of this invention is to provide a process which is cheap and easy to perform. Another object of this invention is to improve colour fastness properties of textile material made out of natural coloured cotton. Yet another object of this invention is to provide a process for the manufacture of yarn/fabric having long lasting and stable ultraviolet radiation absorption/protection and flame resistant properties. Still another object of this invention is to provide a process for the preparation of the yarn/fabric having ultraviolet radiation absorption/protection and fire retardant properties which do not permit the transmission of ultraviolet radiation. According to this invention there is provided a process for the preparation of yarn/fabric (textile material) having ultraviolet radiation/protection and flame resistant properties comprising preparing the yarn/fabric from a natural coloured cotton or blends of natural coloured cotton with other natural and synthetic fibres, treating the yarn/fabric so prepared with 0.1-30% by weight of an alkalis/salts at a temperature of 40-100°C, subjecting the treated yarn/fabric to the steps of washing followed by drying in vaccum oven so as to obtain said yarn/fabric (textile material). In accordance with this invention a yarn/fabric is prepared from the natural coloured cotton. The yarn/fabric so prepared is treated with 0.1-30% by weight of fabric with an alkalis and/or salts for example sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide and/or sodium carbonate, ferrous sulphate, copper sulphate and/or salts of cadmium, nickle, aluminium and tannic acid. This process of treatment is carried on at a temperature of 40-100°C and for a period of 15-180 minutes. The yarn/fabric is subjected to the step of washing and drying in an vacuum oven. A process for the preparation of a yarn/fabric (textile material) having ultraviolet radiation/protection and flame resistant properties according to a preferred embodiment is herein described in detail in the following examples: Example-1: Natural coloured cotton (Gossypium hirsutum type) of brown shade is taken. Out of this cotton fibre, yarn is prepared and finally it is converted in to knitted fabric. This fabric is treated with sodium hydroxide (0.1 to 30% on weight of fabric) and sodium carbonate (0.1 to 20% on weight of fabric) in a drum washing machine at 40-100°C for 15 min. to 180 min. After completion of this process, it is properly washed and dried at vacuum oven. This fabric is tested for ultra protection absorption by Labshpere ultraviolet. Transmittance Analyzer and flammability is tested in term of LOI% value by Flammability Tester of Atlas UPF as per AS/NZS 4399:1996 and LOI% value as per ASTMD 2863 : 1977 of this fabric after and before treatment is given below: (Table Remove) The above sample is also tested for colour fastness to light and found that after treatment with various chemicals as mentioned above colour fastness to light of this fabric improve from 3 to 6. Esxample-2: Gossypium hirsutum type natural coloured cotton of green colour is used for making yarn. This yarn is used for making woven fabric. This is treated with Ferrus sulphate (0.1 to 30% on weight of fabric) for 10 min. to 140 minutes at 40-100°C in drum washing machine. The fa*bric is washed properly and dried. The UPF and LOI% values of this fabric is tested and given below: (Table Remove) Esxample-3: Gossypium hirsutum type naturally coloured cotton of brown colour is taken for preparation of woven fabric. This fabric is treated with sodium hydroxide (1% o.w.f.) followed by treatment with Potassium Aluminium sulphate (3% o.w.f) for 30 minutes in drum washing machine at 70°C. This fabric is washed properly and tested for UPF and LOI value, which are given below: (Table Remove) WE CLAIM: 1 A process for the preparation of yarn/fabric (textile material) having ultraviolet radiation/protection and flame resistant properties comprising preparing the yarn/fabric from a natural coloured cotton or blends of natural coloured cotton with other natural and synthetic fibres, treating the yarn/fabric so prepared with 0.1-30% by weight of an alkalis/salts at a temperature of 40-100°C, subjecting the treated yarn/fabric to the steps of washing followed by drying in vaccum oven so as to obtain said yarn/fabric (textile material). 2 A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein said alkalis/salts comprises for example sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide and/or sodium carbonate, ferrous sulphate, copper sulphate and/or salts of cadmium, nickle, aluminium and tannic acid. 3 A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the step of treatment is carried on for a period of 15-180 minutes. 4. A process for the preparation of yarn/fabric (textile material) having ultraviolet radiation/protection and flame resistant properties substantially as herein described and illustrated in the examples. |
