Title of Invention

"A PROCESS OF PREPARING A BASE COAT COMPOUND"

Abstract A process of preparing a base coat compound comprising: - mixing putty with hardener in the ratio 100: 6- 12% , - adding thinner to set/dilute putty and-hardener mixture in the ratio 1:1 at room temperature to set the base coat compound, which can be applied directly on metals, wood, ABS plastic, glass , glass fibers and concrete as a primer surfacer and filler, if desired for fast operation it can be baked at 120°Cfor half an hour or 80°C for one hour to dry.
Full Text Field of Invention
This invention relates to a process of preparing base coat compound for application directly on metals, wood, ABS plastic, glass, glass fibers and concrete. It can be used under virtually any type of paint e.g. Auto Lacquer, Synthetic finishes, stoving finishes, Epoxy finishes, Polyurethane finishes, Acrylic finishes. It has excellent gloss hold out i.e. it does not absorb gloss from the topcoat so the finish is very good.
Background
For coating surfaces of metals, wood, ABS plastic, glass, glass fibers and concrete, it is the normal practice to use filler, primer, putty, surfacer and paints of different varieties depending upon the material to be coated. The conventional process is to first apply filler on the surface followed by primer, thereafter putty, surfacer and finally paints. After every step the material applied has to be dried and the surface has to be smoothened which involves a lot of time, labour and other inputs.
Object of the Invention
The object of the present invention is to obviate this drawback by preparing a base coat compound which can be applied directly on metals, wood, ABS
plastic, glass, glass fibers and concrete. To achieve the said objective this invention provides a process of preparing a base coat compound comprising:
- mixing putty with hardener in the ratio 100: 6- 12% ,
- adding thinner to set/dilute putty and hardener mixture in the ratio 1:1 at room temperature to set the base coat compound, which can be applied directly on metals, wood, ABS plastic, glass , glass fibers and concrete as a primer surfacer and filler,
- optionally baking at 120°C for half an hour or 80°C for one hour to dry.
The putty used in the process is polyurethane putty comprising of Barytes, etc. 30-50%, modified polyester resin 20-40% and solvents like Xylene, Toluene or Butyl acetate 10-30%.
The hardener used in the process is a M.D.I hardener or H.D.I hardener or M.D.I, monomer or adduct or prepolymer of diphenylmethane diisocyanate, T.D.I, monomer or adduct or prepolymer of Toluene diisocyanate, H.D.I, monomer or adduct or Biuret dimer or trimer, Hexamethylene diisocyanate, I.P.D.I. monomeror adduct or prepolymer of Isophorone diisocyanate or other variants of diisocyanates. These hardeners are in liquid form and can be used individually or in combination.
The thinner used in the process is alcohol free thinner.
The invention will now be described with reference to the following examples.
Example 1
Take putty and MDI hardener in the liquid form in the ratio 100:6% at room temperature and mix them properly. Now add the polyurethane thinner to set /dilute the putty and hardener mixture in the ratio 1:1 at the room temperature to set the base coat compound. The base coat compound can be applied as a primer surfacer directly on the metals, wood, ABS plastic, glass, glass fibers and concrete. The application as a surfacer is generally done after filler procedure followed by paint.
Example 2
Take putty and MDI hardener in the liquid form in the ratio 100:8 % at room temperature and mix them properly. A soft base coat compound, which is obtained, can be applied directly by putty knife on the metals, wood, ABS plastic, glass, glass fibers and concrete. This is to take care of any small irregularities in the surface.
Example3
Take putty and MDI hardener in the liquid form in the ratio 100:8-10% at room temperature and mix them properly. As the putty and the hardener are mixed they will thicken up, when the required consistency is obtained as per the paint requirement thick putty is used as filler. A base coat compound will be obtained which can be applied by putty knife, and the like directly on the metals, wood, ABS plastic, glass, glass fibers and concrete. This is to fill deep grooves or dents in the surface to work as filler.
