AN IMPROVED PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF ESTERS FROM CARBOXYLIC ACIDS USING LEWIS ACID CATALYSTS.

Abstract The invention provides an improved process for the esteriflcation of a wide variety of carboxylic acid such as aromatic, aliphatic, α , β -unsaturated or dicarboxylic acids using readily available Lewis acid catalysts such as CuC12, A1c13, ZnC12, CeCl3 and FeCl3, BF3 Et2O. The important feature of the invention is that the reactions were carried out at room temperature avoiding the use of hydrocarbon solvents .
Full Text The invention provides an improved process for the esteriflcation of a wide variety of carboxylic acid such as aromatic, aliphatic, α , β -unsaturated or dicarboxylic acids using readily available Lewis acid catalysts such as CuC12, A1c13, ZnC12, CeCl3 and FeCl3, BF3 Et2O. The important feature of the invention is that the reactions were carried out at room temperature avoiding the use of hydrocarbon solvents .








We Claim:
1 . An improved process for the preparation of esters from carboxylic acids using Lewis acid catalysts which comprises reacting carboxylic acids such as aromatic, aliphatic, α,β -unsaturated and dicarboxylic acids , such as herein described , with aliphatic alcohols selected from methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, iso propanol and ter butanol in the ratio ranging from 1 : 1 to 1:3 , in presence of Lewis acid catalysts such as herein described wherein amount of Lewis acid employed is 0.1 - 0.5 equivalents of carboxylic acid, for time period ranging from 5- 120 minutes , under stirring at room temperature and recovering the corresponding esters by the conventional solvent extraction method such as herein described .
2. An improved process as claimed in claims 1 wherein the aromatic,
aliphatic, α,β -unsaturated or dicarboxylic acids is selected from the
group consisting of oxalic acid , malonic acid , succinic acid, adipic acid
and L-tartaric acid .
3. An improved process as claimed in claims 1 - 2 wherein the Lewis acid
catalysts used is selected from CuCI2, AICI3, ZnCI2, CeCI3 and FeC13 , BF3
Et2O.
4. An improved process for the preparation of esters from carboxylic acids
using Lewis acid catalysts substantially as herein described with reference
to the examples 1 to 23.
