CATALYTIC CONVERTER IN PARTICULAR FOR A DIESEL ENGINE OR A LEAN-BURN ENGINE

Abstract The invention relates to a catalytic converter for cleaning the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine, especially a diesel engine or a lean-mixture engine, and comprising at least one honeycomb body (6) coated with a catalytically active material, which has channels (3) through which the exhaust gas is able to circulate and which are separated by walls (4, 5). The catalyst container has a first (1) and second (2) zone arranged behind each other in the direction of flow (S). The first zone (1) has a lower heat capacity per unit of volume of the honeycomb body (6) than the second zone (2). The catalyst container is characterized in that the second zone (2) has a heat capacity of at least 800 and preferably at least 900 joule per litre and Kelvin [J/lK]. The metal sheet layers (4, 5) in the first zone (1) preferably have an average thickness without coating of less than 0.06 mm, preferably less than 0.04 mm, and in the second zone (2) preferably an average thickness without coating of more than 0.06 mm, preferably more than 0.08 mm, and especially a thickness of more than 0.11 mm. In this way, the first zone (1) is able to reach operating temperatures rapidly for when exhaust-gas temperatures are high and the second zone (2) is able to store heat for operating conditions where exhaust-gas temperatures are lower.
