| Abstract | This invention relates to a safety scalpel blade assembly which is able to be attached to a handle (12) of the type which has a blade carrier (14) in the form of a finger, the assembly comprising a scalpel blade (10) which can be of conventional manufacture and which has a profile slot (15) which allows the blade (10) to be attached to the blade carrier (14) on the handle (12), and a guard (11) which extends at least about the cutting edge of the blade (10), the guard (11) having attachment means which locks the blade (10) to the guard (11) as the assembly is being attached to the handle (12) thereby preventing the blade (10) from cutting a person, but which releases the blade (10) from the guard (11) when the blade (10) is attached to the blade carrier (15) on the handle, wherein the guard (11) has two opposed side walls (16,18) defining a space there between in which the blade (10) in situated, one said side wall (16) having an elongate slot (17) extending into and along the side wall, the elongate slot (17) adapted to allow the blade carrier (14) to pass through the elongate slot (17) and into engagement with the profile slot (13) in the scalpel blade (10) to attach to the blade (10) while the guard (11) is still in place, and to allow the guard (11) to be retracted from the blade (10) when the blade (10) is attached to the handle (12). |
