Full Text | FIELD OF INVENTION This invention relates to herbal formulation / and a process for preparation thereof where the composition is useful for preventing and management of acute coryza (common cold) to prevent the future onset of sinusitis, acute laryngitis and bronchitis asthma. The formulation of the present invention may also be advantageously used in the prevention of bronchitis, tracheitis and pneumonia among the individuals who frequently suffer from common cold. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Coryza (common cold) is one of the most common health problems among majority of the population of the world. The onset is usually sudden with a burning and tickling sensation in the nose accompanied by sneezing. The throat often feels dry and sore, the head feels, after which, with secondary infection, the secretion becomes thick and purulent and impedes nasal breathing. Coryza may lead to sinusitis, which can become chronic particularly accompanied by nasal obstruction and headache. It may also cause infections of the lower respiratory tract, occlusion of the Eustachian tubes causing deafness and otitis media. Paracetamol, anti-allergic agents and anti-biotics are the drug of choice for its management, which have their own health hazards. Therefore a suitable remedial measure is needed for the prevention and management of common cold without any adverse effect. An object of this invention is to propose a herbal formulation and a process for preparation thereof useful for the prevention and management of common cold (coryza) in all the age groups of both sex. Another object of this invention is to propose a herbal formulation and a process for preparation thereof which enhances the general body resistance against diseases among the individuals who suffer more frequently form common cold. A further object of this invention is to propose a herbal formulation and a process for preparation thereof useful for reducing the frequency of attack of common cold among susceptible individuals. Yet another object of this invention is to propose a herbal formulation and a process for preparation thereof usefulfor management of symptoms like sneezing, watery discharge and also to prevent secondary infections. DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION According to this invention there is provided a herbal formulation for the prevention and management of coryza (common cold) cases comprising: Organic extract as herein described of Hippophae salicifolia (Badriphal) 400-1000 mg Organic extract as herein described of Ocimum basilicum (Van Tulsi) 150-400 mg Organic extract as herein described of Emblica officinalis (Aawla) as herein described 300-600 mg With known additives. Further according to this invention there is provided a herbal formulation for prevention and management of coryza wherein the process for preparation comprising of: a) pulverizing plant part of Hippophae salicifolia (Badriphal), Ocimum basilicum (Van Tulsi), Emblica officinalis (Aawla), b) deeping the pulverized plant parts in hydro alcohol for 24 hours, c) filtered and concentrated in reactor at a temperature of 85°C and at high vaccum between 400-760 MM Hg. d) Mixing 400-1000 mg of Hippophae salicifolia (Badriphal), 150-400 mg Ocimum basilicum (Van Tulsi), and 300-600 mg of Emblica officinalis homogenously and adding known additives such as calcium sulphate. It is to be noted that there is synergetic effect among the different constituents as none of the ingredients is individual by effective in prevention and management of common cold. The chemicals extracted out of the plants are used in the following dose-range in a particular manner- 400- 1000 mg Hippophae salicifolia 150-400 mg Ocimum basilicum 300- 600mg Emblica officinalis The drugs are administered with varying dose schedule and a careful monitoring of the clinical symptomatology present different results. On the basis of oral administration of varying dose schedule, the most effective and preferred dose range comprised of: Hippophae Salidfolia 300-500mg Ocimum basilicum 150-250mg Emblica officinalis 300-600mg The remainder is optionally known additive to make the required preparation. Hippophae Salicifolia (Badriphal): This plant is commonly known as Seabuckthorn and 'Badriphal' belonging to family "Elaeagnacae" whose dried fruit pulp are extracted to collect the mixture of flavonoid, alkaloid and vitamin compounds. Various studies have suggested its immunomodulating properties and also its beneficial effect on respiratory tract and lung disorders. * ' . Ocimum basilicum (Van - Tulsi): This plant is commonly known as Van- Tusli belonging to family 'labiatae' whose dried whole plant are extracted to collect the mixture of methyl innamate, linalool, and ocimene compounds. Various studies have indicated the antiasthmatic, antibacterial and anti-fungal activities. Emblica officinalis (Awala): f This plant is commonly known as 'Awala' belonging to family "Euphorbiaceae" whose dried fruits are extracted to collect the mixture of tannin, vitamin -c, iron, phyllemblic acid and ascorbic acid compounds. Studies conducted on this plant have proven its potent immunotnodulating property, which enhances the general body resistance, against diseases. The known additives are excipients such as calcium sulphate. Example-1: The preparation containing the organic extract of Hippophae salicilplia in the dose of .3o-000mg to cases showing evidence of frequent onset of common cold showed mild improvement in frequency of; attack and feeling of well being. Example -2: The preparation containing the organic extract of Ocimum basilicum in the dose of '"200 mg showed mild improvement in sneezing and nasal water discharges with feeling of well being. Example -3: l The preparation containing the organic extract of Emblica officinalis in the dose of' 3500 mg exerted improvement in general body resistance and also in early fatigue both mental and physical. Mild decrease in frequency of cold attack was also noticed. Example -4: The. preparation containing the organic extract of Hippophae Salicifolia in the dose of ^ 5£»mg and organic extract of Ocimum basilicum in the dose of . 2-SFo mg simultaneously to the cases of common cold showed significant improvement in. the symptoms/ associated with cold and cough like reduced sneezing and watery discharge as compared to before treatment. Subjects also reported better feeling of well being than earlier. Example-5: The preparation conliiiiiing the organic extract of Hippophae Salidlblia in the dose of 400 -mg and organic extract of Emblica officinalis in the dost: of 350-. " ing to the cases suffering from frequent attacks of common cold showed improvement in frequent headache and sneezing. The duration oi' onset of common cold symptoms enhanced as compared to earlier. Example-6: The preparation con la in ing, the organic extract: of Ocimum basilicum in the dose of I _200 "' mg and organic extract Emblica officinalis in the dose of i^si*: 4"om§ to tne cpryza cases exhibited moderate improvement in general feeling of well being recorded in terms of improvement in early fatiguability. Example -7: The preparation containing the organic extract of Hippophae Salcifolia in the dose of 3OOmg, organic extract of Ocimum basilicum in the dose of 200mg and organic extract of Emblica officinalis in the dose of 350 mg simultaneously exhibited maximum effect on the symptoms associated with common cold. The frequency of cold attack reduced significantly and subject reported energetic and feeling of well being which resulted in improvement in day to day work performance. In this invention the combination of three drugs namely Hippophae salicifolia, Ocimum basilicum and Emblica officinalis is used for the preparation of a novel formulation for prevention and management of coryza (common cold). For the first time we have observed that the organic extract of Hippophae salicifolia enchances the cellular body immunity and prevents form cold stress. When the organic extract of Hippophae salicifolia is given with Ocimum basilicum alongwith Emblica officinalis, further potentiates the potency of Hipppphae salicifolia by enchancing general body immunity among the subects who are prone to develop frequent cold and cough due to low body resistance. In traditional practice only Ocimum basilicum is used as a decoction among those cases suffering from common cold and fever. By adding the above combination this prevents from the allergy phenomenon along with increase in body resistance. It is to be understood that the present invention is susceptible to modifications, changes and adaptations by those skilled in the art.
