AN OPTICAL FEEDBACK UNIT FOR ENHANCEMENT OF NONLINEAR FREQUENCY CONVERSION EFFICIENCY

Abstract An optical feedback unit for enhancement of nonlinear frequency conversion efficiency is disclosed. The unit is effective for all those interactions involving at least one secondary coherent source that is generated from a primary laser source through nonlinear frequency conversion and the feedback being realized only for that radiation. The unit consists of a set of four or three properly coated dichoric mirrors, which are positioned with appropriate separation to introduce a positive feedback of energy by making the phase-shift an integral multiple of 2R between the original and the feedback radiation. Using the new unit greatly enhanced frequency conversion has been demonstrated for second harmonic and sum-frequency generation process in a nonlinear crystal with Nd:YAG laser radiation. Possible applications of such a unit in some other important frequency conversion processes like difference frequency generation and optical parametric oscillation are detailed along with feasibility of incorporation of focusing effect.
