The invention further provides plant cells and plants comprising the chimeric genes of the invention as well as septs of such plants comprising the chimeric genes of the invention. The present invention also provides methods for identifying allelic variations of the genes encoding proteins involved in cellulose biosynthesis in a populetion comprising different genotypes or varieties of a particular plant species.
