Title of Invention | A FATLIQUOR COMPOSITION FOR LEATHER PROCESSING |
---|---|
Abstract | A fatliquor composition for leather processing This invention relates to fatliquor composition for leather processing. It consists of an emulsion of mineral oil, vegetable oil, neutralising agent, an anionic emulsifier and a fatty organic extract from press mod of sugar industry emulsified with water. Learner processed with this fatliquor exhibits better softness, fullness and feel over the existing fatliquor composition and can be used as replacement of natural lanolin/wool grease. |
Full Text | This invention relates to a fatliquor composition for leather processing and contains fatty organic extract from press mud which is an agro-waste from sugar industry. Fatliquor is an emulsion consisting of emulsifier fats and oils and water. In leather industry fat liquor is used at different stages of processing of skins and hides to impart softness to tanned leather. Fatliquor is added to the bath in the tanning drum during fatliquoring operations. Lanolin is conventionally used as the fat component of fatliquor composition. Inclusion of lanolin/wool grease imparts fullness, round feel, softness and smooth surface touch to processed leather which are desirable properties in finished leather articles like bags, upholstery, lining and gloving leathers. Such fatliquor composition having lanolin/wool grease fetches good value in the market. Uncertainties in availability and irregular supply of lanolin/wool grease cause problems in maintaining regular supply of fatliquor composition containing lanolin/wool grease. It has now been noticed that fatty organic matter extracted from press mud of sugar industry may replace lanolin/wool grease in fatliquor formulation. It has also been found that the fatliquor composition containing tatty organic extract from press mud improves the quality of the processed leather obtained after fathquoring. Sugar industry press mud normally is used as a low grade organic fertiliser of little economic value finds indirect utilization in this techniques. The mam objective of tins invention is in the production of an improved fotliquor composition which exhibits better performance in the processed leather, is cost effective and is readily available. The fatikntor composition for leather processing according to this invention comprises an emulsion of atkast one mineral oil, atJeast one vegetable oil, known neutralising agents, at toast one known anionic emulsifier and fatty organic extract from press mud emulsified with water. In a preferred embodiment, the fadiquor composition may contain 5-20 parts by weight of a mineral oil, 5-20 parts by weight of a vegetable oil, 1-8 parts by weight of a known neutralizing agent, 30-60 parts by weight of a known anionic emulsifier, 10-60 parts by weight of fatty organic extract from press mud, emulsified with 3-15 parts by weight of water. The active matter in die emulsion is found to be in die range of 40.0 to 70.0 parts by weight. An emulsifier having the right hydrophillic - lyophillic balance is selected. A preferred anionic emulsifier is paraffin sulphonates of high carbon chain of C12 to C25 having a molecular weight of 300 to 500. In another preferred embodiment the fatty organic extract from press mud may be obtained by a process claimed in our copending application No.439/MAS/2001 which relates to a process for producing a fatty organic composition from press mud of sugar industry and a fatty organic composition produced. The process claimed therein consists of extracting press mud initially with an aqueous solution of surfactant and subsequently with water alone. The extracts are combined and after removal of water, the dry mass is extracted with chloroform. The chloroform extract is evaporated to obtain the fatty organic composition. The extract before or after evaporation may be used for the preparation of the fat liquor composition of the subject invention. Fatty composition extracted from press mud by means of an organic solvent may also be used for preparing this fatliquor composition. Obvious modifications and alterations known to persons skilled in the art are also within the scope of the invention and the appended claims. WE CLAIM: 1. A fatliquor composition for leather processing comprising an emulsion of 5 to 20 parts by weight of atleast one mineral oil and/or 5 to 20 parts by weight of atleast one vegetable oil, 1 to 8 parts by weight of atleast one known neutralizing agent, 30 to 60 parts by weight of atleast one known anionic emulsifier, 10 to 60 parts by weight of fatty organic extract from press mud, emulsified with 3 to 15 parts by weight of water. 2. The fatliquor composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein said fatty extract of press mud is obtained by extracting with an aqueous solution of an anionic surfactant. 3. The fatliquor composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein said fatty extract of press mud is obtained by subjecting press mud to organic solvent extraction. 4. The fatliquor composition as claimed in claims 1 to 3, wherein said anionic emulsifier has an affinity both for water and for oil. 5. The fatliquor composition as claimed in claims 1 to 4, wherein the anionic emulsifier is a paraffin sulphonate having C12 to C25 carbon chain and a molecular weight of 300-500. |
