A PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF AN ANTIBIOTIC

Abstract A process for the preparation of an antibiotic, in which process a lactam core selected from the group consisting of 6-aminopenicillanic acid, 7- aminocephalosporanic acid with or without a substituent at the 3-site, 7 -aminode- sacetoxycephalosporanic acid and 7-amino-3-chlorocephalosporanic acid is acylated with an acylating agent, the resulting antibiotic is recovered from the reaction mixture and subsequently the remaining mother liquor is worked up, characterized in that in the working-up step the mother liquor is subjected to an enzymatic hydrolysis reaction in which the antibiotic still present in the mother liquor is decomposed, which decomposition results in the lactam core and subsequently recovering the lactam ore or re-using the lactam core in solution in the process for the preparation of an antibiotic.
