Full Text | FORM - 2 THE PATENTS ACT, 1970 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION SECTION 10 TITLE "INFLATABLE INTRA VENTRICULAR BALLON DEVICE' APPLICANT Dr. Lokendra Singh Resi: 25, "Madhulok", Baji Prabhu Nagar, Ramnagar, Nagpur - 440010 INDIA 'THE FOLLOWING SPECIFICATION PARTICULARLY DESCRIBES AND ASCERTAINS THE NATURE OF THIS INVENTION AND THE MANNER IN WHICH IT IS TO BE PERFORMED." 24 MAY 2007 9-5-2008 GRANTED Field of Invention: This invention relates to a Inflatable Intra Ventricular Balloon Device used in Neurosurgical Operative procedure for huge lateral ventricular tumors of brain. Background and prior art of the Invention: It has been experienced that the huge lateral vcatricular tumors particularly the ones which grow very slowly lead to gross dilatation of the ventricular system and thinning of Cerebral cortical mantle. These tumors are approached either by transcallosal or transventricular route. Excision of such big tumors may lead to complications as follows: • Rapture of cortical veins draining to sagittal sinus due to collapse of cerebral. This can result in subdural haematoma formation. • Formation of subdural hygroma necessitating surgical evacuation. Many neurosurgeons try to put V.P shunt before excising the tumor. Very small number of patients need permanent shunt in this condition hence in very large number of cases shunt insertion is unnecessary and increases the cost of treatment, hospital stay and complications of shunt are also added to the over all complication rate. At present surgeons try to fill the ventricle with Gelfoam (a slowly absorbable Gelatin Sponge) or fill it with saline but none of these techniques work. The necessity of overeorhing. the above difficulty, the present invention is a. device which will allow cerebral mantle to expand and occupy the space created due to tumour excision over a period of few days in graduated manner. The other objectives of the present invention is that by using the invented device the complication arising due to a large lateral ventricular tumour which have grown to huge size leading to obstruction hydrocephalus and thinning of cerebral mantle and excision which is prone to subdural hygroma or subdural haematoma formation is avoided. Statement of Invention In accordance with the present invention this device viz, Inflatable Intra Ventricular Balloon device has provided as assemblage of a Latex Balloon, Silastic Catheter. and One Way Valve Stopper. The device allows brain to expand gradually and occupy the space during operation of brain. Summary of Invention In order to obviate the above mentioned draw backs of inability to perform neurosurgical operations safety by avoiding shunt, the present invention is a device capable of performing Neurosurgical Operative Procedure safety and without hurting the patient for huge lateral ventricular tumours of brain. The device is made of a silastic tubing with a late balloon mounted at ventricular or cranial end and an air tight one way valve device for .inflation and deflation by air at outer end. This device allows brain to expand gradually and occupy the space. This present device serves the purpose of Neurosurgical Operative Procedure much better as compared to the prevalent methods. Brief Description of the Drawing Fig 1 shows the balloon device. The Balloon (1) is a Latex Balloon which is capable of being mounted at one end (ventricular end) which can be inflated with 200 ml to 700 ml v6lume of sterile air. The Catheter (2) is a silastic catheter approx. 2 mm in diameter and about 30 cm long. The air tight stop cock (3) which is one way valve stopper at other end (outer endO to stop leakage of air allowing inflation and deflation with a syringe. Fig 2 shows the device in use Cerebral Veins (J), Sagittal Sinus (2), Brain (3), Skull (4). Lateral Ventricle (5) and Device (6) in situation. Preferred and optional features In one of the preferred embodiments in the present invention device a Latex Balloon capable of being mounted at one-end (ventricular end) which is capable of being inflated with 200 ml to 700 ml volume of sterile air. The device comprises of a Silastic Catheter (fig 1, 2) approx 2 mm in diameter and about 30 cm long. The device comprises of an air tight one way valve stopper (Fig 1.3) at outer end "to stop leakage of air allowing inflation and deflation with a syringe. The optional feature of the device has balloons of different sizes depending upon tumour size are used. Different sizes of devices for paediatric and adult groups are useful. Better materia! replacing silastic and latex material is capable of installation in the device. The preferred features of the device are Silastic tubing, Latex Balloon at Ventricular end and Air tight one way valve at other end. The device so specially designed can be used for all Neurosurgical operative procedures of all age groups. Experiment: The device as shown in Fig 1 has been used in 3 cases of Neurosurgical operation of large lateral ventricular tumour. The device worked very well. The complications arising due to obstruction hydrocephalus and thinning of cerebral mantle have been totally eradicated. The device came out to be very safe, simple and cost effective. I Claim: 1. A inflatable intra ventricular balloon device for use in neurosurgical operative procedure for huge lateral ventricular tumors of brain, said device comprising: latex balloon capable of being inflated with 200 ml to 700 ml volume of sterile air, said balloon being provided at the ventricular end in brain; silastic catheter of 2 mm in diameter and about 30 cm long and having two ends, at one end of said catheter said latex balloon is mounted; and an air tight one way valve stopper being provided at the other end of said catheter, said valve stops the leakage of air allowing inflation and deflation of the said balloon. 2. The inflatable intra ventricular balloon device for use in neurosurgical operative procedure for huge lateral ventricular tumors of brain substantially as herein before described and illustrated with reference to accompanying drawings.
