| Abstract | There is disclosed a two stage filtration system for the treatment of fibrous vegetable matter, particularly oilseed materials such as oil extracted canola flakes to separate the low valued fibrous material from soluble material and small non-structural water-insoluble material of higher value. The process for separating at least one component selected from protein and valuable carbohydrate components from insoluble fiber-containing components of a vegetable product comprises the steps of (a) mixing (in vessel 12) said vegetable product (1) with water to form a slurry (100); (b) filtering (in filter 20) the slurry by impeller filtration to form a predominately liquid filtrate (101) and a moist solid residue (102); and (c) removing water from the solid residue by a compression filtration means (30). |
