PREAMBLE TO THE DESCRIPTION:
The following complete specification particularly describes the invention and the manner in which it is to be performed

FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to a device for spraying material on plants, which is designed in such a way as to accommodate various sizes of shields which can be adjusted to a suitable height to prevent spraying on desired plants.
BACKGROUND AND PRIOR ART:
A selective spray system reduces the amount of agrochemicals used and thereby decreases the cost and the load on the environment. When a weedicide or herbicide is used to destroy unwanted weeds or herbs, it may damage the desired crops also. In such a case, it is necessary to prevent spraying on desired crops, which can be achieved by using a selective spray system.
A funnel shaped plant spray shield is described in US 6065244. Elongated plant stems and leaves can be inserted in the funnel shaped shield through a slot extending along the side of the shield which is held around the plant while spraying the chemical. The operation of inserting the stems in the funnel shaped shield and then spraying the chemical through a spray container onto the weed is tedious.
US 5,499,474 describes an applicator assembly which includes a bottle, a pump trigger mechanism, a hand-held applicator and a solution conduit extending between the hand-held applicator and the trigger mechanism. The applicator includes a pair of opposed pads which receive fluid from the bottle through the conduit and a clamping projection for controlling the flow of fluid through the conduit into the applicator pad.
2

Plant-cutting shears with chemical applicator are disclosed in US 5,606,822. The user can cut a plant and cause the resilient chemical-holding element to make direct fluid-applying physical contact with the plant wounds.
A boom sprayer assembly is disclosed in US 4,199,896 for applying herbicides in a controlled pattern about a row of trees, bushes, etc.
A bell-shaped hood to confine the spray is shown in US 2,928,610. However, the hood is fixed to the spray nozzle and cannot rotate relative to the nozzle. Various types of shielded-spray, tractor-drawn devices are disclosed in US patent Nos. 2,682,132; 3,038,665; 3,807,634 and 3,977,605. In addition, US Patent No. 2,682,132 discloses a photo-electric sensing device for locating the non-targeted area and the spray nozzle is guided or positioned accordingly. A freely rotatable hood for the spray element which acts as a sensing element to determine the motion of the spray nozzle carrying boom is described in US 4,199,896.
US 5,196,065 discloses a garden spray shield apparatus which includes a flat, flexible or rigid vertical wall to afford protection to desired vegetation. US patent 4,574,731 sets forth a spray shield comprising a thin planar sheet of material with a handle attached to the sheet, the sheet is held in a manner so as to prevent spraying on desired crops.
The inventions of the prior art are either difficult to handle or complicated. Thus, there is a need for a shield applicator which can be handled, moved and used easily & effectively.
3

OBJECTS OF INVENTION
The main object of the invention is to provide a shield applicator which is simple, effective, easy to move & use, and manufacture.
Yet another object of the invention is to easily and effectively prevent spraying of herbicides, weedicides etc. on the desired crops while spraying the same on unwanted vegetations.
Another object of the invention is to minimize damage to desired crops.
Still another object of the invention is to minimize the use of agrochemicals and thereby reduce the cost by restricting spray only where required.
Another object of the invention is to minimize load on the environment by minimizing the use of agrochemicals.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
In spite of the fact that certain non-selective systemic herbicides such as glyphosate exhibit many unique biological properties and high unit activities on practically all annual and perennial weeds, the potentiality of such weedicide have not so far been realized by small farmers in destroying weeds particularly in field and horticulture. Glyphosate is toxic to field crops at rates that provide good to excellent weed control. Hence it is essential to achieve crop selectivity mechanically by applying a non-selective weedicide only to the target, and at the same time preventing its contact with non-target crops.
4

The shield applicator of the present invention would be of great advantage to small marginal farmers as it can be used or operated with least fatigue and better application precision.
The applicator of the present invention can accommodate different sizes of shields to suit various sizes of crops. The shields are preferably made up of a transparent material such as acrylic plastic, so as to enable the person applying the agrochemical to witness spray and operate the applicator in a precise way. The shield can be fixed at a suitable height above the ground.
The material can be sprayed through a spray-nozzle which is embedded in the device in such a way as to perform a dual function, one is to fix the shield at a suitable height with the help of a knob provided on the main pipe. Secondly, it produces a wide angle flood-jet towards weeds covered under the shield.
Two wheels connected with a pipe are also provided so that the device can be easily handled and moved as required.
A pushing rod combined with a flexible delivery hollow pipe connected with the nozzle is provided. A check-nut is provided at the other end of the hollow pipe which helps to handle pressure regulator which is connected to a tank filled with the solution to be sprayed.
The spray tank with the pump is provided with suitable straps so that the person using the device can easily carry it on the back by hanging it with the help of straps.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
As shown in Fig. 1, the device for spraying material on selected plant comprises of a main rod (1) connected at one end with a second rod
5

(2), the said second rod may be straight or bent and attached to wheel (3) at both the ends. The main rod (1) is preferably either partly or fully being hollow and with a provision to hold a 3rd rod (4) at a flexible point of attachment across its length, the 3rd rod further attached with a shield (5), inside the shield a spray-nozzle (6) is preferably attached, the other end of the nozzle being on the other side of the shield. The other end of the spray-nozzle is connected to the hollow part of the main rod, preferably with the help of a flexible syphon (7).
The other end of the hollow side of the main rod is connected by a flexible tube to a tank (8) preferably provided with a pressure regulator (9).
The tank (8) is filled up with the solution to be sprayed, which passes through the hollow part of the main rod (la) and flexible syphon (7) to the nozzle.
The tank (8) is provided with streps in order to enable the person spraying the material to carry the tank easily and conveniently on the back.
The shield can be of any desired shape & size, and it can be oriented in a convenient direction as required by the geometry of the rows in the field. Moreover, it can also be adjusted at a suitable height above the ground depending on the size of the weeds/herbs on which the material is to be sprayed.
