Full Text | The present invention relates to a process for producing stamped coal cake. In particular it relates to a process for producing stamped coal cake of improved strength and stability using a binder even at lower moisture level. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Stamp charging for making stamped coal cake has been established as a versatile technology. Stamp charging not only improves the coke properties that can be obtained from a given coal blend, it also broadens the coal base for coke making, permitting the use of inferior coals without impairing the coke quality. persent no binder other than water is being practiced in making stamped coal Generally the coal as received for preparing the coal blends contain moisture varying between 6 to 7% during non-monsoon seasons. This moisture content is not sufficient enough to impart requisite strength to the stamped coal cake for its stability. It is essential to ensure a minimum of 10% moisture content in the coal blend for making coal cake with requisite strength, so that it could be safely introduced into the hot oven without any breakage. Therefore, an extra quantity of 3-4% water has to be added intentionally to the coal blend to impart the requisite cake strength. This calls for additional thermal energy and also causes delay in the process. Thus stamp charging is a more energy intensive process when compared with conventional top charging. A need therefore, exists for providing an alternative binder other than water for obtaining better stability of coal cake at low moisture level. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Thus an object of the present invention is to provide a binder which will ensure better stability of coal cake at low moisture level. Another object of the present invention is to provide a binder which will ensure saving in thermal energy in the stamp charging process. Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a binder that improves the rheological properties of coal blend that contributes to the quality of coke produced from inferior coal. A further object of the invention is to reduce the cycle time with consequent increase in productivity. These and other objects of the present invention can be achieved by applying a resinous material to coal blends as a binder for making stamped coal cake. The binder used in the present invention can be coal tar pitch obtained as a main fraction of the primary distillation of coal tar from coking coal. Thus the present invention provides a process for producing stamped coal cake comprising the steps of: preparing a mixture of coal as received with normal moisture content, for obtaining a predetermined blend of coal; and applying a binder to said coal blend for making stamped coal cake of improved strength and stability. DETAILED DESCRIPTION Coal tar pitch used as a binder in the present invention is a resinous material containing a and types of resins. The resins contribute significantly to the binding of coal particles. Moreover, it contains approximately 93% carbon, 97% of which is in the form of condensed aromatic compounds. Hence, addition of pitch to the coal blend would enhance the anisotropk; carbon content of the resultant coke that contributes to the coke strength. The specification of the pitch is given below: Addition of coal tar pitch to coal blends also improves the fluidity of the blends, it favors wetting of non-softening grains, effects the homogenization of coal mass and facilities moving and binding of the structure elements. The pitch penetrating the porous structure of coal retards the thermal decomposition of the group components of the blend at plastic temperatures and promotes the rearrangements of the structure. Coal tar pitch has an advantageous influence on the formation of homogenous optically coke structures with high mechanical strength. Therefore, in stamp charging the addition of coal tar pitch to the coal blend prior to stamping will improve the requisite strength and stability of cola cake at lower moisture levels. It would also result in a reduction in the composition of thermal energy. A further benefit that can be derived from the use of the binder of the present application is the improvement in the strength characteristics of the resultant coke made from colas having poor rheological properties. There is also substantial improvement in the yield of coke. A comparative study with the conventional method is given below: WE CLAIM 1. A process for producing stamped coal cake comprising the steps of: - preparing a mixture of coal as received with normal moisture content, for obtaining a predetermined blend of coal; and - applying a binder to said coal, with normal moisture content, blend for making stamped coal cake of improved strength and stability. Characterized in that the said process makes a cake of coal in order to agglomerate multiple unusable size of coal to transform usable shape and size by mechanical treatment for further processing. 2. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein said mixture of coal contains between 6 to 7% moisture. 3. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein said resinous binder is coal tar pitch obtained as a main fraction of primary distillation of coal tar from coking coal. 4. The process as claimed in claim 2, wherein said coal tar contains about 93% carbon, of which 97% is in the form of condensed aromatic compounds. 5. A process for producing stamped coal cake substantially as herein described. The invention relates to a process for producing stamped coal cake comprising the steps of preparing a mixture of coal as received with normal moisture content, obtaining a predetermined blend of coal; and applying a binder to said coal, with normal moisture content blend for making stamped coal cake of improves strength and stability. |
