Title of Invention

A BLOOD PUMP

Abstract The invention relates to a blood pump for extracorporeal applications, comprising a housing, the housing having a top cover (1) and a bottom cover (2); an impeller (3) pivotallY balanced on at least two bearings (10, 11); an inlet port (4) axially configured on the top cover (1) for a:<ial ingress of blood, and an outlet port (5) radially configured on the top cover (1) for ra'dial egress of blood. The impeller (3) is embedded with a multi-pole circular ring magnet (7) enabling conversion of the potential energy generated by the electromagnetic forces into kin~tic energy for imparting to the fluid through a forced roation of the impeller (3), and in that the impeller (3) comprises a plurality of through holes (12) and back vanes (13) in order to reduce blood damage.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION:
This invention relates to blood pump, More particularly, this invention relates to a centrifugal blood pump for extracorporeal applications.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
Blood pumps are integral part of each and every cardiopulmonary bypass circuit. Traditionally, roller pumps are used in the extracorporeal circuit to pump blood due to its pulsatile flow similar to that of human heat. Such pumps are attended with the difficulties of blood damage, after load sensitivity and are complicated and after unreliable during operation.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION:
It Is therefore an object of this invention to propose a blood pump for extracorporeal applications.
It is a further object of this invention to propose a blood pump which imparts insignificant blood damage.
Another object of this invention to propose a pump which dissipates very low heat energy.
Yet another object of this Invention to propose a pump which is pressure sensitive.
A further object of this invention to propose a pump which is single use disposable.
The§e and other objects of the invention will be apparent to a person on reading the accompanying description.

At the outset of the description which follows, it is to be understood that the ensuing description only illustrates a particular form of this invention. However, Such a particular form is only an exemplary embodinnent and the teachings of the invention is not intended to be taken restrictively.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS:
The invention will now be described in further details with the help of the accompanying drawings where
Fig 1 shows the perspective view of the blood pump
Fig 2 shows a front sectional view
Fig 3 shows a perspective view of the impeller.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION:
According to this invention is provided a blood pump for extracorporeal applications comprising a housing, a magnetically driven impeller balanced in pivot bearing with an axial port for blood inlet and a radial port for blood exit.
The centrifugal blood pump for extracorporeal applications described herein has a housing consisting of top cover (1). bottom cover (2) and an impeller (3) all made of rigid plastics like polycarbonate. Blood enters axially through an inlet port (4) and leaves radial through an outlet port (5). The Impeller Is semi-open type with multiple straight or curved vanes(6). The impeller has a multi-pole circular ring magnet (7) embedded in it. The impeller has a top pivot (8) and a bottom pivot (9). The pivots are made of materials like stainless sfeel ^nd /or with suitable coating like nitirding or diamond like carbon coating. The top pivot rests on a top bearing (10) where as the bottom pivot rests on a bottom bearing (11).

The bearings are made of materials like ultra high molecular weight polyethylene. The top bearing has sufficient gap for smooth blood flow. The impeller has through holes (12) and back vanes (13) in order to reduce blood damage and thrombus formation.
The blood pump described herein before propels fluid by converting potential energy generated by the electromagnetic forces into kinetic energy, which is imparted to the fluid through the forced rotation of an impeller. It imparts insignificant blood damage and dissipates very low heat energy. It is pressure sensitive so that there won't be any tube rupture even in the case of pump occlusion. Further, it does not pump air that may be inadvertently induced into the circuit and in which air tends to remain at the center of the pump. These and other advantages of the blood pump according to the invention make it a unique one of its kind.

WE CLAIM:
1. A blood pump for extra corporeal applications comprising a housing,
driven impeller balanced in pivot bearing with an axial port for blood
inlet and a radial port for blood exit.
2. The blood pump as claimed in claim 1, wherein said housing has a top
cover and a bottom cover.
3. The blood pump as claimed in claim 1, wherein said impeller is semi-
open type with multiple straight or curved vanes.
4. The blood pump as claimed in claims 1 & 3, wherein said impeller has
a muiti-pole circular ring magnet embedded therein.
5. The blood pump as claimed in claims 1&3, wherein said impeller has a
top pivot and a bottom pivot, made of material such as stainless steel
with or without a coating such a nitride or diamond like carbon coating.
6. The blood pump as claimed in claims 1 & 5, wherein the top pivot rests
on a top bearing and the bpttopn pivpt rests on a bottom bearing.
7. The blood pump as claimed in claim 6, wherein s^jd gearings are
made of high molecular weight polyethylene.
8. The blood pump as claimed in claim 1, wherein said impeller has
through holes and back vanes.
