Abstract | A process for producing spectral fingerprints of water solubles or pollutants comprising of collecting a plurality of water samples from different locations, subjecting said samples to the step of centrifugation characterised by centrifugation at 3000-4000 rpm so as to remove undissolved matters (sediment: tables) therefrom, scanning the supernatant to determine the absorbance at the pre¬determined wavelength at around 200-800 nanometeres of the pollutant mixture, and then producing the fingerprints of different pollutants with the help of the computer. |
Full Text | FIELD OF INVENTION This invention relates to a. process of produci ng f i rtgerpr i nts. BftCKSROUND Q£ INVENTION It is generally known that, fingerprints are indicators of the changes o-f water. A water sample is normally collected from a water body such as rivers, ponds, wells, other natural or man made sources, and the fingerprint is obtained so as to determine the amount of solubles or contaminants in the form of solubles present, in the sampled water . OBJECTS QF THE INVENTION An obie-ct of this invention ic to propose a method of producing fingerprints for determining the neture of solubles present in & sampled water. Another ob iect. of this invention is to propose & method of producing fingerprints for determining the quantity of various solubles present. in a sampled water. Still another obiect of this invention is to propose a method of producing fingerprints which can continuously monitor the water quality status of any stagnant, or flowing water body. Yet another obiect of this invention is to propose' a method o-f producing fingerprints which is ef-f icient. Further objects and advantages of this invention will be more apparent -from the ensuing des-c:r ipti on. At the outset o-f the description which •follows, it. is to be understood that. the ensuing description only illustrates a particular form of this invention. However, such a particular -form i & only an exemplary embodiment, and without intending to imply any limitation on the scope o-f this invention- Accordingly, the description is to be understood as an exemplary embodiment, and reading o-f the invention arid riot intended to be taken restrictively. DESCRIPTION QF THE INVENTION According to this invention, the water-samples are collected -from the water body and subjected to the step of centrifugation for removal of the sedimentables. The top supernatant is then scanned at a given wavelength to obtain a spectral profile. Preferably, such a scan is effected in a spectrophotorneter and at. & wavelength of, for example, 250-700 nanometers to obtain such a spectral profile. The selective absorption by the material will depend on the chemical structure of the material of the sample. In -fact, the signal provided is a summed signal o-f the various compounds present in the sample material. Thus, the digital values of the absorption pro-file is then sub iec.ted to a mathematical deconvoluti on to obtain a spectra -for each individual component. Such a decortvol uted spectra components constitute -fingerprints. The -f incusrpri nt. has three characteristics. The -first characteristic i s that of a maximum absorption at. a given wave length. The second characteristic is that o-f width at half height. Thus, smaller- the width, greater is the purity o-f the sample material. The third characteristic is the total area under -fingerprint which reflects the total amount of material present in the samp1e mater i a 1. The fingerprints are taken at different locations to determine the water quality status of the water body. sample material. Thus, the digital values of the absorption profile is then subjected to a mathematical deconvolution (using a computer program developed as a part of the process) by a computer being connected to the spectrophotometer through an inter—face(RS 232), to obtain a spectra for each individual component. Such a deconvoluted spectra components constitute fingerprints. The spectrophotometer used is in ultra violet visible near IR spectrophotometer and the inter—face is a R.S. 232 interface. The fingerprints has three characteristics. The first characteristic is that of a maximum absorption at a unique wavelength. The second characteristic is that of width at half height. Thus, smaller the width, greater is the purity of the sample material. The third characteristic is the total area under fingerprint which reflects the total amount of material present in the sample material. The fingerprints are taken at different locations to determine the water guality status of the water at different stations and as shown in the figs 1— a. WE CLAIM: 1. A process for producing spectral fingerprints of water solubles or pollutants comprising of collecting a plurality of water samples from different locations, subjecting said samples to the step of centrifugation charactarised by centrifugation at 3000-4000 rpm so as to remove undissolved matters (sediment tables) therfrom, scanning the supernatant to determine the absorbance at the pre-derermined wavelength at around 200-800 nanometeres of the pollutant mixture, and then producing the fingerprints of different pollutants with the help of the computer. 2. A process for producing fingerprints of water solubles and /or pollutants substantially as herein described and illustrated. |
