Title of Invention

"A METHOD FOR THE PREPARATION OF PLASTICIZER"

Abstract Subjecting the Post Consumer waste as herein described to the step of alcoholysis in presence of a catalyst to obtain a reaction mixture, stirring the said reaction mixture continuously for a considerable period of time to produce a yellow viscous solution of the plasticizer.
Full Text DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION;
Post consumer waste is such as left over remains of packaging products of beaverages plastic bottles, films made up of polyethylene, terephphthalate such as water and soft drink plastic bottles, cups, containers etc. was collected cleaned and cut into flakes. Waste was reacted with ethyl hexanol in the ratio of 1:1, 1:1.5 with p-TSA as catalyst (1% of total reaction mixture), in three-necked round bottom flask fitted with condenser, stirrer and thermometer. The reaction was continuously stirred for 12-17 hrs and the reaction temperature was maintained in the range of 170-200°C. A yellow coloured viscous solution was obtained. It was characterized for various properties such as acid number, hydroxyl number, viscosity, number average molecular weight, density, specific gravity. It was also characterized by spectroscopic techniques such as IR, NMR.
Apart from ethyl hexanol, n-butanol, n-decanol etc can also be used for the preparation of plasticizer. Zinc acetate, stannous oxalate can also be used as catalyst.
The polymeric plasticizer was then incorporated with other additives in PVC. PVC sheets were prepared and tested for various properties such as mechanical, electrical etc.
The product obtained was characterized for various properties such as Hydroxyl value, Acid value, number average molecular weight, viscosity, specific gravity and density. The product was also characterized for various spectroscopic techniques such as IR, NMR etc. This product was used in the PVC compounding as plasticizer and properties of the sheets were found to be improved. These properties were compared with the properties of DOP.
The viscosity of the polymeric plasticizer was found to be in the range of 120-150 cps at strain at stain rate of 100 rpm when Spindle No. 2 was used at the temperature 25°C with the help of Brookfield Viscometer. The hydroxyl no. of the plasticizer was found in the range of 100-200 and acid number 10.00-20.00. The number average molecular weight was found in the range of 500-2000. Substitution factor was calculated to 0.99, which suggest the plasticizer efficiency is comparable with other existing plasticizer.
EXAMPLE:
The alcoholyste of PET waste was carried out with 2-ethyi hexanol in the ratio of (PET: Alcohol ranging from 1:1 to 1:3) with p-toluene sulphonic acid as catalyst at 170*0 under air atmosphere for a period of 15 hours in a three necked flask. The catalyst was used in the range of 1% to 5% (of the total reaction mixture). The reaction time was found to reduce as the quantity of catalyst was increased from 1 to 5%. The reaction mixture was continuously stirred with rpm of 300. The whole of the PET waste gets dissolved in the reaction mixture after a period of 10 hours. A dear yellow coloured viscous solution was obtained.

WE CLAIM;
1. A method for the preparation of the plasticizer comprising the steps of:-
- subjecting the Post Consumer waste as herein described to the step of alcoholysis, wherein the ratio of Post Consumer Waste and alcohol is 1:1 to 1:3 in presence of a catalyst p-toluene sulphonic acid in the range of 1% to 5% of the total reaction mixture, at 170°C for 15 hours to obtain a reaction mixture,
- stirred with rpm of 300 the said reaction mixture continuously for a considerable period of time to produce a yellow viscous solution of the plasticizer.
2. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the alcohol used for alcoholysis is 2-ethyl hexanol.
