Abstract | The invention generally relates to a mechanism of extraction of ribbons from jute mesta plant.More particularly the invention relates to a multiplant manual ribboning device for extraction of ribbons from a bundle of at least 10-15 jute or mesta plant operable in one cycle and the said device can achieve a ribboning capacity of up to 70 kg stem/man-hour.In the present device,the bark of the jute including a full lenght of jute stick is separated at a time in one operation.The device is suitable for ribboning freshly harvested plant or substantially dry plant having certain amount of moisture content. |
Full Text | -2-FIELD OF THE INVENTION: The invention generally relates to a mechanism of extraction of Ribbons from Jute and Mesta Plant. More particularly the invention relates to a multipiant manual ribboning device for extraction of ribbons from a bundle of atleast 10-15 jute or mesta plant operable in one cycle. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION: The fibres of Jute are being extracted from the stem of jute plant by a natural microbial process popularly known as retting. Retting is defined as a preferential rotting process to separate fibre from the woody stem without damaging the fibre cellulose. In Conventional retting, bundles of whole Jute plants after defoliation are immersed in ponds, ditches which requires 15 to 20 days for retting. Quality of fibre depends on proper retting. Due to limited resources of water and owing to uncontrolled retting process, the fibre quality largely gets affected. Such a process of natural retting also causes environmental pollution. To overcome the adverse effect of retting conditions on fibre quality in conventional retting practice of Jute plants in ponds and ditches, several devices have been developed to extract ribbon from the plant for obtaining better quality of fibre. An operation of peeling the barks from Jute Plant to yield ribbon performed either manually or by machine is called ribboning . Ribboning in a machine is generally preferred with freshly harvested plant containing suitable moisture content which yield quality fibre . Such a process simultaneously discards the traditional retting process which involves provision of bulk quantity of natural water including a considerable time period, apart from causing environmental pollution. -3- During the past decades, continuous research activity could provide a numbers of improved ribboning devices with different capacity in India and also in other jute producing countries for extraction of ribbon from jute and mesta plant. In India, initial practice was manual ribboning with simple country device for stripping the green bark from single plant by utilising a vertical pole, bamboo work and bicycle hub. In China, the workers adapt a simple hand tool comprising a pair of rollers and a cutting plate for defoliating the stem, with a capacity of 20kg/hour of green ribbon. In a country like Bangladesh, a bamboo hook ribboner device having a low capacity is generally used for stripping off green bark from jute . A further development of the ribboning device has been proposed in a jute producing state of India, namely, West-Bengal, which provides a wheel setting manual ribboner for extracting fibre from one or two jute plants at a time. Such a process constitutes, passing of plants between the gaps of two wheels from one side and yielding the ribbons, and separating the full length stick from the plant from other side of the device. However, such a device suffers from the drawback of low efficiency and output. Another ribboning device was proposed by National Institute of Research on Jute & Allied Fibre Technology, Calcutta, India, which constitutes a single roller or a double roller manual ribboner for working on one or two plants at a time to produce ribbon without breakage of sticks. The roller is set in a bicycle hub and fitted vertically on a fixed base. The output and efficiently is still low in this model. -4- An yet further development made by Central Research Institute on Jute & Allied Fibres (ICAR), discloses a power driven rapsador type decorticator which separates the bark from stem disintegrating the woody stick into small fragments. This machine is costly to the small farmers and not popularized among the jute cultivators for the disadvantage of frequent breakage of jute stick during its operation. The present invention aims at overcoming the difficulty involved in the stripping off the jute ribbon over the traditional system in respect of the quality and quantity of production. OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION It is therefore an object of the invention to propose a multiplant manual ribboning device which eliminates the disadvantages of the prior art. Another object of the invention is to propose a multiplant manual ribboning device which is capable of ribboning of a bundle of 12-15 jute & plant stem in a single operation. An yet another object of the invention is to propose a multiplant manual ribboning device which can achieve a ribboning capacity of upto 70 kg stem/ man-hour. A further object of the invention is to propose a multiplant manual ribboning device in which the bark of the jute including a full length of the jute stick are separated at a time in one operation. A still further object of the invention is to propose a multiplant manual ribboning device which is suitable for ribboning freshly harvested plant or substantially dry plant having certain amount of moisture content. -5- An yet further object of the Invention is to propose a multiplant manual ribboning device which can be easily operated by a male or female unskilled worker. A still another object of the invention is to propose a multiplant manual ribboning device which is compact, portable, cheap, and involves insignificant maintenance cost. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION: Accordingly, there is provided a multiplant manual ribboning device for ribboning of Jute Plant stem suitable for both jute and mesta plant for efficient and viable ribboning. The ribboner is enabled to ribbon 12-15 stems of jute or mesta plant depending on the thickness of the stems in a single operation. A basal end of the stem of about 5 to 10 cm has to be malleted to hold one end of the device. At the top of the device there is an arrangement to mallet the stem. A bundle of 10 to 15 stems with malieted basal ends are allowed to pass through the front end of a plurality of rotating rollers of the device at a time and the basal ends of the ribbons are then pulled from the back end of the device after allowing the stems to move between the rollers, and the ribbons are separated from the sticks. Figure-1-Shows a schematic diagram of a manual ribboner according to the prior art. Figure-2- Shows a schematic diagram of a multiplant manual ribbonig device according to the present invention. -6- As shown in Figure -2, the device comprises a body (1) embedded rigidly on a base plate (6) supported by two vartical stands (7,8) at two lateral ends. On the top, the body (1) is provided with a handle (2) to hold the bundle of 12-15 stems of jute or mesta plant at a time. Just below the handle (2), a malleting means (3) is provided for breaking the root end of the stems before extraction. A pair of horizontal rollers (4,5) mounted on two vertical brackets and designated as a top roller (4) being disposed at a upper position, and a bottom roller (5) disposed at a lower position, thereby maintaining a gap (15) between the rollers (4,5). The bottom roller (5) is fixed while the top roller (4) can slide upward and downward with the help of atleast two spring means (9,10) fastened at both end of the rollers (4,5), The upper roller (4) is mounted on a pair of first bearing (11,12) at two ends which is fastened on both sides of a first of the two vertical brackets. The bottom roller (5) is mounted on a second pair of bearings (13,14) at two ends which is also fastened on both sides of the second vertical bracket. Initially the gap (15) between the two rollers (4,5) is maintained at about 6mm which may be increased to about 75mm according to the need of feeding the plant stems. -7-We Claim: 1. A multiplant manual ribboning device for retting the fibre from a bundle of atieast 10-15 jute or mesta plant operable in one cycle, the device comprising:- . a body (01), embedded on a base plate(6) which is rigidly fixed at the ground, being supported by atleast two vertical stands (7,8) originated from the base plate(6); - a handle (2) provided on top of the body (6) for holding the bundle of jute/mesta plants; - a mallet means (3), supported by the atieast two vertical stands (7,3) provided below the handle (2) for breaking the root of the jute/ mesta plant stem; - a top roller (4) slidably mounted on a first pair of bearings (11,12) being fastened on a first of the atleast two vertical stands (7,8); - a bottom roller (5) non-slidably mounted on a second pair of bearings (13,14) being fastened on a second of the atleast two vertical stands (7,8); and - atleast two biasing means (9,10) disposed at both sides of the vertical stands (7,8) for flexibly joining the top and the bottom rollers (4,5), thereby allowing movement of the jute or mesta plants between the rollers(4,5). 2. The device as claimed in claim 1, wherein a holder (2) is provided to hold the bundle of atleast 10-15 plants of jute at a time. -8- 3. The device as claimed in claim 1, wherein a gap (15) is maintained between the top and the bottom rollers (4,5). 4. A multiplant manual ribboning device for extraction of ribbons from a bundle of atleast 10-15 jute or mesta plant operable in one cycle as substantially described and illustrated herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
