Abstract | Bitumen/asphalt modifier is manufactured in wet conditions, using expensive polymers either recycled or as fresh ingredients. Cost of manufacture is high and processing time longer. The present invention not only does away with use of any polymeric compounds but relies on dry conditions for manufacture. Oleo amine is added in a small fraction of 5% by weight of batch size. The invention scores in terms of low processing costs and short batch time. |

TITLE OF THE INVENTION : 'A process for manufacturing bitumen / asphalt modifier, using crumb rubber and oleo amines' 3. PREAMBLE TO THE DESCRIPTION COMPLETE SPECIFICATION The following specification particularly describes the invention and the manner in which it is to be performed 2. India Title of Invention A process for manufacturing bitumen/asphalt modifier, using crumb rubber and oleo amines Field of Invention The invention pertains to the field of road building bitumen/asphalt materials and more particularly to the field of bitumen/asphalt modifiers based on oleo amines and crumb rubber, which is available plentiful in the form of discarded vehicle tires. Background of Invention There are numerous prior works of art reported in the field. They are evaluated in terms of process parameters used in manufacture of bitumen/asphalt modifiers and are compared with the present work to draw out similarities and dissimilarities. US Patent 5393819 It relates to a bitumen/asphalt modifier, made by mixing thermoplastic elastomeric copolymer with fibrillatable polytetrafuoroethyelene and molybdenum disulfide. These ingredients are expensive and add to the cost of repairing or building roads. The present work employs no such expensive ingredients and relies upon as much as 75% by weight crumb 2 rubber of 30 mesh size. No similarities are found between the cited, prior work and the present invention. US Patents 5936015 and 5399598 The cited work relates to a binder that contains a low fraction of 20% by weight of crumb rubber and up to 10% by weight fraction of polyoctenamer. The components are added to heated liquid bitumenasphalt cement. The present work requires no thermal energy, while the cited, prior work requires melting the bitumen/asphalt cement. No similarities are found between the cited, prior work and the present invention. No further information on polyoctanamer is provided. US Patent 6284820 This cited work pertains to modification of bitumen/asphalt with a copolymer of ethylene and propylene having specific characteristics. It differs from the present invention in terms of use of copolymer. The present invention relies in no way on the copolymer described in the cited work. US Patent 5558703 3 This work relies on use of recycled plastics such as styrene-butadiene polymers and styrene-isoprene polymers and is therefore different from the present invention, which uses no such recycled plastics. US Patent 5578118 This work is based on use of a polyphenolic-containing vegetable extract in quantity of 1% by weight. The present invention is not based on polyphenolic compound and is therefore different. US 6759453 This cited work refers to preparing polymer adducts between polyamines and functionalized polymers. The functionalized polymers include polyolefin plastomers or elastomers, elastomeric polyethylene-polypropylene and compositions of styrene olefins. The present invention does not rely on use of adducts and is therefore quite different. 3.8 US 5719215 This work relies upon application of thermal energy to a wet process, which uses an aromatic oil. The present invention does not use the aromatic oil and works in dry conditions. No prior, conflicting work is found against the present invention. 4 4.0 Objects of Invention 4.1 A primary object of this invention is to provide a dry process for bitumen/asphalt modifier, where no thermal energy is required to be applied. 4.2 Another object of this invention is to reduce material cost of bitumen/asphalt modifier by use of inexpensive single ingredient together with crumb rubber. 4.3 Another object of this invention is to simplify process for manufacture of bitumen/asphalt modifier and to reduce processing time for bitumen modifier. 5.0 Summary of the Invention 5.1 A process for making bitumen/asphalt modifier (44) from discarded tires (12), comprises the following steps: (i) manually separating extraneous matter such as steel, glass, fabrics (13) from discarded tires (12), (ii) feeding the discarded tires (11) into feed hoppers (10), (iii) pulverizing tires (11) in a pulverizer (20) to particle size 30 mesh, (iv) discharging the ground rubber crumb (31) into a holding tank (30) (v) feeding ground crumb rubber (31) to a ribbon mixture (40) through a hopper (41) such that crumb rubber (31) quantitatively represents 75% by weight the batch size, (vi) starting the ribbon mixture (40) and under the movements of the ribbons, adding natural bitumen/asphalt (42) ground to 30 mesh particle size through the said hopper (41) to the said ribbon mixture (40) such that the natural bitumen/asphalt (42) represents 20% by weight the batch size, (vii) adding to the said ribbon mixture (40) through the said hopper (41) oleo amine (43) such that the oleo amine (43) quantitatively represents the balance 5% by weight batch size, (viii) mixing for 2- 4 hours the contents in the said ribbon mixture (40) at ambient temperature, (ix) stopping the said ribbon mixture (40), (x) packing the crumb rubber bitumen modifier (44) into 25 kg bags. 6.0 Description of Drawings: Drawing # 1 illustrates a process flow sheet for making bitumen modifier from discarded rubber, 7.0 Description of the Invention: 7.1 A process for making bitumen/asphalt modifier (44) from discarded tires (12), comprises the following steps: (i) manually separating extraneous matter such as steel, glass, fabrics (13) from discarded tires (12), 6 (ii) feeding the discarded tires (11) into feed hoppers (10), (iii) pulverizing tires (11) in a pulverizer (20) to particle size 30 mesh, (iv) discharging the ground rubber crumb (31) into a holding tank (30) (v) feeding ground crumb rubber (31) to a ribbon mixture (40) through a hopper (41) such that crumb rubber (31) quantitatively represents 75% by weight the batch size, (vi) starting the ribbon mixture (40) and under the movements of the ribbons, adding natural bitumen/asphalt (42) ground to 30 mesh particle size through the said hopper (41) to the said ribbon mixture (40) such that the natural bitumen/asphalt (42) represents 20% by weight the batch size, (vii) adding to the said ribbon mixture (40) through the said hopper (41) oleo amine (43) such that the oleo amine (43) quantitatively represents the balance 5% by weight batch size. (viii) mixing for 2- 4 hours the contents in the said ribbon mixture (40) at ambient temperature, (ix) stopping the said ribbon mixture (40), (x) packing the crumb rubber bitumen modifier (44) into 25 kg bags. 7.2 The said mixing is carried out in dry conditions inside the said ribbon mixture (40). 7 7.3 The said oleo amine has a melting point in the range of 135 C to 155°C, has an acid value of 8-11 and an iodine value of 0.1 to 1.25. 8 9.0 I claim: 1 A process for making bitumen/asphalt modifier (44) from discarded tires (12), comprising: (i) manually separating extraneous matter such as steel, glass, fabrics (13) from discarded tires (12), (ii) feeding the discarded tires (11) into feed hoppers (10), (iii) pulverizing tires (11) in a pulverizer (20) to particle size 30 mesh, (iv) discharging the ground rubber crumb (31) into a holding tank (30) (v) feeding ground crumb rubber (31) to a ribbon mixture (40) through a hopper (41) such that crumb rubber (31) quantitatively represents 75% by weight the batch size, (vi) starting the ribbon mixture (40) and under the movements of the ribbons, adding natural bitumen/asphalt (42) ground to 30 mesh particle size through the said hopper (41) to the said ribbon mixture (40) such that the natural bitumen/asphalt (42) represents 20% by weight the batch size, (vii) adding to the said ribbon mixture (40) through the said hopper (41) oleo amine (43) such that the oleo amine (43) quantitatively represents the balance 5% by weight batch size, (viii) mixing for 2- 4 hours the contents in the said ribbon mixture (40) at ambient temperature, 9 (ix) stopping the said ribbon mixture (40), (x) packing the crumb rubber bitmen/asphalt modifier (44) into 25 kg bags. 2. A process for making bitumen/asphalt modifier (4) as claimed in claim 1, where the said mixing is carried out in dry conditions inside the said ribbon mixture (40). 3. A process for making bitumen /asphalt modifier (44) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the said oleo amine (43) has a melting point in the range of 135° C to 155° C, has an acid value of 8-11 and an iodine value of 0.1 to 1.25. 4.
