Title of Invention

A JOINING MECHANISM FOR SPACE FRAME AND CHASSIS FRAME OF VEHICLE BODY AND METHOD OF JOINING

Abstract This invention relates to a vehicle body comprising: a space frame having plurality of main tubes with flattened lower ends and cross tubes interconnected with each other, a chassis frame having at least two long members and multiple cross members interconnected together; wherein an outer sill is fixed to the flattened lower end of said main tubes; an inner sill is fixed to the cross members of said chassis frame; said outer still is fixed to said inner sill to integrate said space frame to said chassis frame.

PREAMBLE TO THE DESCRIPTION
The following provisional specification particularly describes the invention
and the manner in which it is to be performed.

Field of invention:
This invention relates to vehicle body of an automobile and more particularly it relates to joinery of space frame and chassis frame of vehicle.
Background of Invention:
Space frames are been used in various vehicles with some of the joinery concepts as mentioned below:
1) Bolting of the lower ends of tube to Chassis frame by fasteners.
This method is used by many small capacity passenger vehicles where in the design of vehicles are not intended for Roll-over safety.
2) Welding of the round ends of the main tube to the Chassis floor.
This method is also used by small capacity passenger vehicles without Rollover Safety requirements. Draw backs associated with this are low production rates and quality issues in manufacturing the vehicles.
3) Welded joint with Main tubes inserted in the Chassis frame holes.
This method is not suitable for mass production and not been widely used due
its critical design joint. The draw backs associated with above said methods are , these provide only support to the soft canopies and they will not proved safety to the passengers.
Objects of this invention:
> The main object of this invention is to provide a vehicle body with integrated space frame with rigid construction
2

> Another object of this invention is to provide a vehicle body with integrated space frame which meets regulatory and safety requirements
Brief description of Invention:
The vehicle body with space frame in accordance with this invention mainly comprises of chassis frame, space frame, outer sill, inner sill and support bracket wherein space frame consists of main tubes and cross tubes. The lower ends of the main tubes are flattened to provide joinery with outer sill. The outer sill is fixed to inner sill which in turn is fixed to chassis frame. Support brackets are provided on main tubes and fixed to outer sill to provide sufficient strength to main tubes.
Detailed description of invention:
Referring now to the drawings wherein the showings are for the purpose of illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention only, and not for the purpose of limiting the same, Fig. 1 - Shows sectional view of vehicle body with space frame in accordance with this invention Referring to figure 1
The vehicle body in accordance with this invention consists of space frame (A) and chassis frame (B). Space frame (A) comprises multiple main tubes (1) and multiple cross tubes (not shown) fixed together. The ends of said main tubes are flattened at the lower ends to provide joinery with outer sill (2). The outer sill (2) is provided with a flat surface (6) to butt the flattened end (7) of main tube (1) and a recess (8) to accommodate the main tube (1).
The recess in the sill provides the clearances for main tubes against any variations on tube diameters and flattened tolerances. To support the main tube at the top of joint a

support bracket (3) is fixed to the tube and also to outer sill (2) so that the main tube does not bend in lateral loads i.e roll over or torsional loads.
Chassis frame (B) consists of at least two long members and multiple cross members interconnected together to form a chassis. Inner sill (5) is fixed to said cross members. Said space frame (A) is then fixed to the chassis frame (B).
Fixing methods used in said invention may be of any conventional method.
Method of fixing space frame to chassis frame mainly consists of
a) Flattening of main tubes at lower end
b) Fixing main tubes to outer sill
c) Fixing inner sill to chassis frame
d) Fixing space frame to chassis frame
The foregoing description is a specific embodiment of the present invention. It should be appreciated that this embodiment is described for purpose of illustration only, and that numerous alterations and modifications may be practiced by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. It is intended that all such modifications and alterations be included insofar as they come within the scope of the invention as claimed or the equivalents thereof.
