FIELD OF INVENTION:
This invention relates to the field of electrical traction in general and to a
compact single unit single phase traction transformer with associated
chokes and reactor with cooling equipment and a method of
manufacturing the same for broad gauge AC electrical multiple unit
locomotives, in particular.
BACKGROUND AND PRIOR ART:
Presently the main traction transformer, chokes and series reactor,
conservator, oil-cooler, oil pump etc. for traction application for electrical
multiple unit locomotives are manufactured as separate items and are
assembled during coach manufacturing. The present invention provides a
method for making a compact single unit single phase traction
transformer that is complete with all the accessories as above and is
supplied in one complete unit.
In the prior art, a single phase traction transformer, choke units and
reactor for broad gauge AC electrical multiple units consist of, among
other parts or features, the following separate units:
i) Core and coil assembly of main transformer.
ii) Core and coil assembly of drop choke
iii) Core and coil assembly of tap choke

iv) Core and coil assembly of series reactor
v) Oil filled transformer tank with HV, LV and Auxiliary connections
vi) Oil filled tank for chokes and reactor
vii) Oil conservator or oil expansion vessel
viii) Oil cooler with cooling fans
ix) Oil pump
x) Fittings like silica gel breather, buchholz relay, thermostat, HV
Bushing,L V and Auxiliary Terminal blocks etc.
All these units must be individually installed, connected and tested for
each EMU coach unit.
The above design employs a total of three tanks. Due to weight and space
constraint in the existing design, the core-coil assembly of main
transformer is housed in one tank while the core-coil assembly of reactor and the chokes are housed in a separate tank and conservator is supplied
as loose third tank. The existing design is such that the transformer and
reactors are cooled using a common conservator, oil-pump and cooler for
all the three tanks. In this design, to have common cooling, the

conservator is kept common, but ail the various parts are made separately
and supplied loose to be assembled in the AC EMU motor coach. It also
requires that the main transformer, choke unit, oil conservator, pump and
cooler are mounted at different locations in the EMU coaches. These
components then have to be inter-connected for proper circulation and
cooling of oil, using bulky and comparatively long pipe-work.
This arrangement leads to several problems like:
i) Mis-matches in various assemblies
ii) Breakages during transportation of different loose components.
iii) High voltage transformer oil contamination. (Oil contamination
takes place as loose pipes, at coach manufacturing facility, have
to be used to connect main transformer and choke unit with oil
pump, cooler and conservator),
iv) The extra pipe-work leads to additional drop in oil pressure and
less efficient cooling,
v) The complete assembly of transformer with cooling accessories
cannot be tested at one go.

All this results in inefficient operation and substantial time is wasted
during coach manufacturing in assembly of transformer and choke
units. In the existing arrangement many of the components are
mounted above the floor, in the motor coach, needing extra space and
valuable seating space for commuters is reduced.
Further, owing to the requirement of manufacturing separate units of
transformer, choke unit, conservator oil cooler etc. overall extra space
and weight is needed which can be avoided if one compact single unit
is made with all the fittings and components alongwith associated
pipe-work.
The present invention seeks to overcome these drawbacks of the prior
art.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION:
An object of the invention is to provide a compact single unit traction
transformer for AC EMVS.

Another object of the invention is to offer additional space for passenger
accommodation in the EMU coaches.
A further object of the invention is to reduce the weight of the
transformer.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION:
A method is proposed here to make the complete transformer, choke
units, rector, oil cooler, oil pump and all other transformer components
and accessories in one single compact unit. In this new compact design
following advantages are offered:
i) Compact single unit
ii) More efficient cooling as long pipe-work is reduced and the total
oil is available for cooling transformer, choke units and reactors
together.
iii) All the accessories are mounted and complete unit I supplied as
one single finished item.

iv) The whole unit can be mounted under the coach floor resulting
in saving of on board space for commuters,
v) The chances of high voltage oil contamination, during assembly
of various oil carrying parts, at coach manufacturing plant are
avoided,
vi) The complete transformer unit can be tested complete with its
cooling circuit,
vii) Transportation of various loose components and problem
associated with these are avoided,
viii) Mismatching of parts is completely eliminated,
ix) Assembly time and effort at coach manufacturing plant is
substantially reduced,
x) Maintenance and replacement is faster and easier, the complete
single unit becomes a plug and play type component.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWING:
Fig. 1 shows the details of the complete compact transformer unit in
accordance with the invention.

The invention will be described in details with help of an exemplary
embodiment of the invention depicted in the drawing. There can however
be many other embodiments, all of which are deemed covered by this
description.
According to the present invention, the main transformer core (1) and coil
assembly is mounted horizontally and hung from the top cover. The two
chokes - drop choke (2) and tap choke (3), and series rectors (4) are
mounted vertically on the main tank base. All the above items are housed
in same single oil filled tank (5). The oil tank (5) is internally partitioned
into two chambers - one for main transformer (1) and the other for
chokes (2,3) and series reactor (4) for efficient directed cooling. The oil
flow is directed, so that the pumped oil follows a predefined path resulting
in much less pressure drop leading to better cooling.
The HV connection of the main single phase transformer is brought out
from the top of tank (5) through HV bushing (6) suitable for fixing main
HV 25 KV incoming cable. The HV-Neutral earth is provided from side of
the tank. The LV connections are also brought out through LV terminals
(7) from the side of the transformer tank (5) into LV cable box. The

connections for the chokes (8) and reactor (9) are brought out form the
other side into separate cable boxes. LV auxiliary connections (10) are
brought out into another cable LV auxiliary cable box.
The oil cooler (11) and oil pump (12) are also mounted along the walls of
the main tank (5) with associated pipe-work (13). The pump is mounted
on choke side of the tank and is mounted directly supported on the tank
wall. The oil cooler, along with the cooling fan (14), is hung from the
extended stiffners provided on the main tank cover. The oil expansion
vessel, or the conservator (15) is provided on top of the tank cover and is
connected to main tank through Buchholz relay. Adjustable oil conservator
arrangement is provided that can be conveniently mounted above the
coach floor also. The silica gel air breather (16) is provided from top of
the oil conservator and is mounted at a suitable height for easy
maintenance.
Finally, all the components are connected electrically and mechanically
and the unit is filled with oil after testing.

Thus, with the above design in accordance with the invention, the
complete main transformer, choke units, series reactor, oil pump, oil
cooler with cooling fans, conservator, pipe work and all other accessories
are combined in one single compact complete transformer unit (A) for
broad gauge AC electrical multiple unit traction transformer to provide
more efficient transformer and saving in space.
