| Abstract | A motorcycle includes a two-stroke engine of crankcase scavenged type including a piston (2) reciprocally mounted in a cylinder (4), the wall of the cylinder having an exhaust port (15) and at least one transfer port (18) formed in it. The transfer port (18) communicates with the interior of the crankcase (14) via a transfer passage (20). The transfer port (18) is arranged to open before the exhaust port (15) closes, whereby, in use, the cylinder is scavenged. The engine also includes an inlet duct (28) and a carburettor (30) which is arranged to supply fuel into the inlet duct. The inlet duct is divided into two passages, a rich passage (36) and a lean passage (34), the rich passage (36) being connected to the interior of the crankcase (14) and the lean passage (34) being connected to the transfer passage (20). The carburettor includes a throttling valve (38) and is so arranged that, when the valve is closed, fuel flows into both the rich and lean passages and, when the valve is open, substantially all the fuel flows into the rich passage and substantially only air flows through the lean passage. |
