METHOD FOR DISPLAYING TELEVISION PROGRAM ON A MOBILE DEVICE

Abstract The present invention relates to a method for displaying TV program on mobile devices comprising the steps of detecting the mobile device by the TV using a detection mechanism; connecting the mobile device with the TV using a bearer mechanism; sending the channel details by the mobile device to the TV; and streaming the current channel contents to the mobile device based on the channel details. According to the invention, when a user is in the vicinity of the TV, the user's mobile device is detected by the TV, using a detection mechanism such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). Once the mobile device is detected, a short range wireless bearer such as-Bluetooth, Infrared, Wireless LAN or Ultra Wide Band (UWB) is triggered and the mobile device is connected to the TV. A wired bearer mechanism such as Universal Serial Bus (USB) can also be used for connecting the mobile device to the TV. Further, the mobile device sends 'user selected channel' details such as channel number, mode in which channel has to be viewed etc. to the TV. The TV can then stream the current channel contents to the mobile device (primary mode) or the TV can continue displaying the current channel contents on the TV screen and stream the contents of a different channel to the mobile device (secondary mode). Real time Transport Protocol (RTP) can be used to stream the contents of the channel from the TV to the mobile device.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a mobile communication technology Particularly the present invention describes a protocol for transmitting the TV Program on the mobile screen and also the framework in TV and mobile device for sending, receiving and presentation of the TV program. More particularly the present invention relates to a method of displaying TV program on a mobile device.
DESCRIPTION OF PRIOR ART
According to a US Patent titled "System for dual-display interaction with
.integrated television and internet content" discloses a Systems and methods for
i[ using two or more cooperating but physically independent displays for enhanced

viewing of data streams, where the viewing on one display does not interfere with the viewing on the other displays. The type of data streams can be complex streams such as multiple televisions (TV) broadcast signals or other video signals, internet data, or other local data such as information related to the state of a consumer's home appliances. The signals can include data embedded in the vertical blanking interval (VBI) for analog signals, or in dedicated slots in a digital signal according to protocols such as MPEG. The system includes a hand-held and portable remote control with a motion picture display, and

In another US patent titled "Picture-in-picture television receiver" A picture-in-
l picture television receiver is disclosed in which a television picture to be inset is
compressed at a compression rate of 1/n and inset as a small-picture in part of a

picture reproduction is provided therein in or from which a video signal can be randomly read and written line by line as a unit. In the single field memory is stored the small-picture video signal line by line by the application of a writing clock in which case the time taken in the writing is less than 1/(n+1) of a horizontal period. Then, from the memory is read the stored small-picture information by the application of a reading clock of n times the frequency of the writing clock during the time that writing is not performed, and supplied to be inset in the main television picture, A small-capacity buffer memory is provided at the prestage or following stage of the field memory to prevent the read/write timing overlap
.Currently if a member at home is watching a TV channel, and another member wants to see some information in some other channel, the second channel is shown as a small display overlapping the current channel contents. This
degrades the user experience in viewing the TV Program. Also in Picture -in
I ■ Picture the sound of the second channel cannot be heard.

The above first Patent requires a base station with a tuner to be connected to the TV.
Currently only viewing two channels simultaneously Is defined.
The current system does not have any mechanism to identify the user connected to the secondary device.
According to a US Patent Publication titled "Methods and apparatus for simultaneously viewing multiple television programs" proposes a method and system for viewing one or more secondary programs on a handheld device while viewing a primary program on a television. The handheld device can be a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), a handheld computer, or the like. The handheld device has a display window for viewing the secondary program and communicates with the television using Bluetooth or 802.11 communication protocols.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
A method for displaying TV program on mobile devices is disclosed. In one aspect, a method for displaying TV program on mobile devices includes detecting the mobile device by ihe TV using a detection mechanism, the detection mechanism is Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), connecting the mobile device with the TV using a short range bearer mechanism, the bearer

mechanism can be wired or wireless, sending the channel details by the mobile device to the TV and streaming the current channel contents to the mobile device based on the channel details, Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) is used to stream the contents of the channel from the TV to the mobile device.
, In another aspect, a method for displaying TV program on mobile devices includes a framework in TV adapted to perform the steps of, getting a request from the mobile device or an auxiliary device, authenticating a user request based on profile sent by the mobile device, processing the request and getting the requested channel contents, sending the channel contents as a stream to mobile device and providing a master console for viewing the channels and auxiliary devices connected to TV.
In yet another aspect, a method for displaying TV program on mobile devices includes a framework in mobile device adapted to perform the steps of sending user profiles to TV, providing an user Interface for displaying details of channel available for viewing through mobile device, packaging and sending the user request along with user selected viewing mode to TV, receiving video streams .from TV and displaying in mobile screen and presenting TV content in mobile screen including controls for user.
The invention relates to the field of mobile devices. In particular, the invention proposes a method for displaying a TV program on a mobile device.
According to the invention, when a user is in the vicinity of the TV, the user's mobile device is detected by the TV, using a detection mechanism such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). More specifically, it proposes a method and system for viewing one or more secondary programs on a handheld device while viewing a primary program on a television. The handheld device can be a

Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), a handheld computer, mobile phone or the like. The handheld device has a display window for viewing the secondary program and communicates with the television using short range communication protocols. Once the mobile device is detected, a short range wireless bearer such as Bluetooth, Infrared, Wireless LAN or Ultra Wide Band (UWB) is triggered and the mobile device is connected to the TV. A wired bearer mechanism such as Universal Serial Bus (USB) can also be used for connecting the mobile device to the TV. Next, the mobile device sends a 'user selected channel' details such as channel number, mode In which channel has to be viewed etc. to the TV. The TV can then stream the current channel contents to the mobile device (primary mode) or the TV can continue displaying the current channel contents on the TV screen and stream the contents of a different channel to the mobile device '(secondary ri:iode). Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) can be used to stream the contents of the channel from the TV to the mobile device.
Further, the invention also proposes authentication of the user for viewing different channels on the mobile device. Depending on the user's profile (details such as name, age etc.), the channel that the user has requested can or cannot be displayed on the mobile device. For example, kids cannot be allowed to watch adult channels.
Accordingly the present invention relates to a method wherein a TV Program contents can*be displayed on mobile screen.

Accordingly the present invention relates to a method wherein a TV can enable viewing multiple channels at same time using mobile devices.
Accordingly the present invention relates to a method wherein the mechanism to connect TV and mobile device could be short range wireless medium like BT, IR, WLAN or UWB.
Accordingly the present invention relates to a method wherein the mechanism to connect TV and mobile device could be wired connection using protocols like USB.
Accordingly the present invention relates to a method used to package and stream TV program contents to mobile device.
Accordingly the present invention relates to a method for presentation of the TV Program on mobile screen.
Accordingly the present invention relates to a method wherein a Mobile device can be used to request viewing of a TV channel and in which mode.
Accordingly the present invention relates to a method to view the channel content on mobile device with or without display on TV. In this case TV needs to tune only one channel.

Accordingly the present indention relates to a method to view different channel content on mobile device from that being shown on TV. In this case TV needs to tune multiple channels.
Accordingly the present invention relates to a method wherein some image frbm mobile can.be super imposed on TV content and the same can be displayed in TV also. The super-imposition could be like drawing a circle highlighting some portions on the screen.
Accordingly the invention explains a method for displaying TV program on mobile devices comprising the steps of:
detecting the mobile device by the TV using a detection mechanism; the
detection mechanism could be based on Radio Frequency Ideptification
(RFID)
connecting the mobile device with the TV using a short range bearer
mechanism;
sending the channel details by the mobile device to the TV; and
streaming the current channel contents to the mobile device based on the
channel details.
These and other objects, features and advantages of the present invention will become more apparent from the ensuing detailed description of the invention taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION
The preferred embodiments of the present invention will now be explained with reference to the accompanying drawings. It should be understood however that the disclosed embodiments are merely exemplary of the invention, which may be embodied in various forms. The foUowing description and drawings are not to be construed as limiting the invention and numerous specific details are described to provide a thorough understanding of the present invention, as the basis for Jhe claims and as a basis for teaching one skilled in the art how to make and/or use the invention. However in certain instances, well-known or conventional details are not described in order not to unnecessarily obscure the present invention in detail.
Referring to Figure 1, it shows the block diagram of the method of TV display on mobile device. When a user is in the-vicinity of the TV, his mobile device will be detected by the TV automatically by using the available detection mechanism like RFID. Once the mobile device is detected, it will trigger the short range wireless bearer like Bluetooth, WI_AN, UWB or Infrared and connect the TV to the mobile .device. Bearer mechanism to connect to the TV can also be wired (USB or Serial).

The mobile device \N\\\ send its profile to the TV for intelligent filtering of channels. This profile could be used to identify and authenticate the user for viewing channels. For example, this authentication can be used to restrict kids from viewing adult channels.
The mobile device can be used to select a particular channel from TV using the connection bearer between TV and the mobile to view it on the mobile screen.
This will involve below steps:
a) Software application in the mobile device will send the "user selected channel" details to TV. These details could include the channel number and mode in which channel has to be viewed.
The protocol for sending this information will be defined.
The below modes are defined by this method:
Primary mode: In this mode, TV will stream current channel contents to mobile. It can also enter a stand by mode where it will switch off its screen if the user wants to view the channel contents only in mobile.
Secondary mode: In this mode, the TV will continue displaying the current channel contents in TV screen. TV will filter the new channel requested by mobile device and stream the video to mobile device.

b) The protocol for this streaming could be RTP. This method can also define
protocol for using Mobile [TV standards like DMB or DVB-H over short range

wireless medium.
c) This Video stream will be displayed on the mobile screen using the protocol defined by this method. The method will also define presentation mechanism'for richer user experience for viewing the TV contents on mobile screen.
Also the request for seeing the program on mobile device can also be made using an auxiliary device like remote control. For example, this could be used to alert a member in some other room of the house to view the channel contents in mobile.
A software framework in TV with a protocol for doing the following will be defined:
1. Get the Request from mobile device/auxiliary device
2. Authenticate the user request based on profile sent by the mobile device.
3. Process the request and get the requested channel contents. Here TV might require capability to tune two channel contents at same time.
4. Send the channel contents as a stream to mobile device.

5. A Master console for viewing all secondary devices connected to TV and channels being viewed on them.
A Protocol for packaging the video streams and sending to mobile device will be defined.
A software framework in mobile device with a protocol for doing the following will be defined:
1. Sending user profile to TV
2. User Interface for displaying details of channel available for viewing through mobile

3. Packaging and sending the user request along with user selected viewing ' mode to TV .
4. Receive Video streams from TV and display it in mobile screen

5. Presentation of the TV content ih mobile screen including controls for user available at this stage. E.g. channel controls, volume controls etc.
6. To handle interrupts/events in mobile device

The profile can be updated with viewing history of the TV channels by the user. Parents can leverage on this feature to know the viewing pattern of the kids. The history could be details like
Channel number
Time spent viewing the channel
Small clip of the channel
In the above description the display device like TV could be connected to a Set-Top Box (STB) and the Mobile device requests the software framework on STB over short range bearer mechanism that can be wired or wireless for streaming the current or secondary channel to the mobile device as mentioned above with respect to TV. The present invention is explained with respect to display device ,TV communicating with Mobile over short range bearer mechanism however the same behavior can be a achieved with respect to other devices like PC connected with TV tuner card , STB etc communicating with Mobile device over short range bearer.
Although the present invention has been fully described in connection with the preferred embodiments thereof with reference to the accompanying drawings, it is to be noted that various changes and modifications are possible and are apparent to those skilled in the art. Such changes and modifications are to be understood as included within the scope of the present invention as defined by 'the appendecj claims unless they depart there from.

We Claim:
1. A method for displaying TV program on mobile devices comprising the steps
of:
detecting the mobile device by the TV using a detection mechanism; connecting the mobile device with the TV using a bearer mechanism; sending the channel details by the mobile device to the TV; and streaming the current channel contents to the mobile device based on the channel details.

7. A method for displaying TV program on mobile devices further comprises a
framework in TV adapted to perform the steps of:
getting a request from the mobile device or an auxiliary device;
authenticating a user request based on profile sent by the mobile device;
processing the request and getting the requested channel contents;
sending the channel contents as a stream to mobile device; and
providing a master console for viewing the channels and auxiliary devices connected to TV.
8. A method for displaying TV program on mobile devices further comprises a
'framework in mobile device adapted to perform the steps of:
sending user profiles to TV;
providing an user Interface for displaying details of channel available for viewing through mobile device;
packaging and sending" the user requestalong with user selected viewing mode to TV;

receiving video streams from TV and displaying in mobile screen; and presenting TV content in mobile screen including controls for user.
9. The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the mobile device requests the
software framework on STB for streaming the primary or secondary channel on
mobile device
10. A method for displaying TV program on mobile devices substantially
described particularly with reference to the accompanying drawings.
