Abstract | This invention relates to a capsular bag supporting device for supporting the capsule during phaco emulsification comprising a shaft extending into a shank through an intermediate bend member and a round plate member provided at the terminating end of the shank. |
Full Text | 2 FILED OF INVENTION This invention relates to a capsular bag supporting device or instrument. In particular, this invention relates to a supporting instrument or device supporting the capsule during phaco emulsification. BACKGROUND OF INVENTION For treatment of cataract, it is known to make a circular opening in the anterior capsule and emulsifying protein material by an ultrasound driven needle. Such a procedure is known as phaco emulsification. If zonules are weak or broken, the crystalline lens may then drop back leading to complications. Thus, the capsule ought to be supported during the procedure of phaco emulsification in cases of zonular weakness. Such a support was hitherto provided by an instrument known as Iris hook to support the capsule. However, such an instrument was not satisfactory as area and shape of support was not ideal. Such a hook was modified so as to support the capsule. Thus, an angle was imparted to the J shaped retractor and length of hook increased so as to support the capsule upto the fornix of the capsule. However, such a modified retractor was still attended with the disadvantage that it supported only a single point of the fornix. Yet another disadvantage is that it had a pointed end, which could penetrate and damage the capsule. 3 OBJECTS OF INVENTION An object of this invention is to propose an improved construction of a capsule bag supporting device or instrument. Another object of this invention is to propose an improved construction of a capsule bag supporting device or instrument which obviates the disadvantages ieferred to hereinabove. Yet another object of this invention is to propose an improved construction of a capsule bag supporting device or instrument which maintains the position of the capsule during the procedure of phaco emulsification. Still another object of this invention is to propose an improved construction of a capsule bag supporting device or instrument which supports the fornix as well as the capsulorhexis rim, so that the peripheral capsule isn't attracted towards the phaco tip. A further object of this invention is to propose an improved construction of a capsule bag supporting device or instrument which avoids the problem of the capsule supporting device trapping cortex. A still further object of this invention is to propose an improved construction of a capsule bag supporting device or instrument which makes it possible to perform 4 posterior chamber phaco even with subluxated lenses having minimum zonular support. Further objects and advantages of this invention will be more apparent from the ensuing description. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION According to this invention there is provided a capsular bag supporting instrument or device comprising an elongate member extending at the distal end into an angular member and being generally of a V-shaped member, the free end of the V-shaped member extending into a hook, characterized in that the open loop at the end of the hook is in the same plane as the anterior capsule. in accordance with this invention, the instrument comprises an elongate member. The distal end of the elongate member extends into an angled member, said member being generally of a V-shape. The free end of the V- shaped or angled member has an open ended loop at the tip. in accordance with this invention the hook is angled to be in the plane of the anterior capsule. As a result, it's easy to get a firm and reliable grip on the rim 5 of the fornix of capsule. Further the loop at the tip of the hook is rounded to prevent any accidental damage to the peripheral capsule while placing the hooks in the capsular bag. The round tip also provides a larger support area per hook thereby reducing the number of hooks required in each surgery. Once the hooks are placed in position to support the capsule, an endocapsular ring can be inserted This invention relates to a capsular bag supporting device for supporting the capsule during phaco emulsification comprising a shaft extending into a shank through an intermediate bend member and a round plate member provided at the terminating end of the shank. |
