Title of Invention

AN IN-BUILT CHEVRON TYPE MOISTURE SEPARATOR DEVICE FOR SMALL CAPACITY TURBINES HAVING WET STEAM AT TURBINE OUTLET

Abstract An in-built chevron type moisture separator device for small capacity turbine having wet steam at turbine outlet adaptable to proper separation of wet steam and dry steam comprising:- - a vertical capsule shaped steel structure (1) having supported by 4 supporting legs (11) at the bottom; - an assembly of 4 nό"s of chevron fitted boxes (4) disposed at upper half inside the structure for separation of fine moisture content; - an assembly of coarse Separator (9) disposed at the lower half inside the structure for separation of coarse moisture content; - the device provided with an inlet wet steam near the middle portions and one outlet at the top for dry steam, one outlet at bottom of coarse separation drawn and one outlet at the right side for draining out water separated at fine separator. The said moisture separator device capable of isolating wet steam and dry steam levering out water which forms due to loss of kinetic energy while passing through the separator.
Full Text FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to moisture separator. More particularly, the
present invention relates to an in-built chevron type moisture separator
device for small capacity turbines having wet steam at turbine outlet
adaptable to proper separation of wet steam and dry steam and provide dry
steam at separator outlet for utilization at lower capacity turbine.
BACKFROUND AND PRIOR ART:
The quantity of water formed due to expansion of steam in the steam Turbine
is considerably high in Nuclear Power plants and in lower rating plants where
steam entering into H.P Turbine is of low pressure and temperature. After
expansion in H.P Turbine steam becomes wet steam and water content is
quiet high as of the order of 15% to 20%. Removal of moisture become
essential in these Turbine before further processing to increase efficiency and
to avoid corrosion and erosion damages to turbine components.
So for demister type Separator were used which are not so much effective
and after separation also around 1% moisture is left. Requirements of almost
dry steam at Separator outlet led to idea of design and finalization of Moisture
Separator sizing with proven chevron type separators.

and separated drain flows to the drain chambers due to force of gravity.
Moisture Separation takes place based on the principle of loss of kinetic
energy.
As shown in Fig 2 the chevron separator are assembled and fitted in
separator Box. Number of profiles to be filled in each box, number of boxes
and separator profile sizes are finalized based on number of parameters like
steam wetness at the turbine outlet, quantity of moisture to be handled,
availability of space for fixing the moisture separator assembly etc..
Perforated plates are fitted at inlet and exit of separator boxes to make steam
flow entry normal.
As shown in fig 3 - an in built chevron type small capacity moisture separator
device (1) which is round cylindrical like a vertical capsule shape of steel
structure having 4 foot support (11) at the bottom. The moisture separator
device (1) contains in built complete moisture separator assembly of 4 no's
moisture Separator profile box (4) assembled vertically, which contains
number of profiles based on design requirement.
The Moisture Separator device is provided with an inlet (5) for wet steam at
one side and having one dry steam outlet (2) at top.
The separator device also provided a droplet separator drain (6) at the middle
and connected to separator box assembly and one coarse separator drain
(10) at the bottom.
The moisture separator device complete assembly consists of two segment
(a) coarse separator assembly (9) and (b) fine droplet separator assembly (4)
coarse separator assembly (4). Cdarse separator is for removal of bigger size
droplets and fine droplet separator for much small size droplet removal.
Assembly also contains the drain removal system separately from coarse
separator (9) and fine separator (6).

OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
It is therefore, an object of the present invention to propose an in-built
Chevron type moisture separator device for small capacity turbines which
separates wet steam and dry steam.
Another object of the present invention is to propose an in-built Chevron type
moisture separator device for small capacity turbine which delivers moisture
free steam, i.e dry steam at outlet for further processing.
A further object of the present invention is to propose an in-built Chevron
type moisture separator device for small capacity turbine which provides
better moisture separation efficiency.
A still further objection of the present inventions to propose an in-built
Chevron type moisture separator device for small capacity turbine with
reduced pressure drop.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE
INVENTION
As shown in Fig 1, a proven chevron type separator profile, these separator
element are basically thin stainless steel formed in desired profile arrived
based on respective aerodynamic studies / flow modeling test etc. In these
droplet separator profiles steam flow is diverted / deflected as per flow path

The wet steam enters into device (1) through inlet (5) and first passes
through a coarse separator pipe (7) and thereafter moves up to pass through
droplets separator box assembly (4). Dry steam comes out from box assembly
(4) moves up and passes through the outlet (2) nozzle at the top. Separated
drain is drained out through the droplet separator outlet (6) which is formed
due to loss of their kinetic energy while passing through box assembly (4).
The coarse particles are separated at coarse separator arrangement (9) and
drains out through an outlet drain (10).
For level control in separator Assembly, stand pipe connection is provided and
level is controlled with level transmitters and level controller (8).
