Full Text | 061058 PILOT DESIGN FOR IMPROVED CHANNEL AND INTERFERENCE ESTIMATION [0001] The present application claims priority to provisional U.S. Application Serial No. 60/883,756, entitled "PILOT DESIGN FOR IMPROVED SIMPLIFIED CHANNEL AND INTERFERENCE ESTIMATION WITH DEDICATED PILOT TONES FOR OFDM A" filed January 5, 2007, assigned to the assignee hereof and incorporated herein by reference. BACKGROUND I. Field [0002] The present disclosure relates generally to communication, and more specifically to a pilot design for a wireless communication system. II. Background [0003] A wireless multiple-access communication system can support multiple users by sharing the available radio resources. Examples of such multiple-access systems include Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) systems. Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) systems, Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) systems, Orthogonal FDMA (OFDMA) systems, and Single-Carrier FDMA (SC-FDMA) systems. [0004] A wireless multiple-access system may support multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission on the forward and/or reverse link. On the reverse link (or uplink), one or more terminals may send transmissions from multiple (NT) transmit antennas at the terminal(s) to multiple (NR) receive antennas at a base station. A MIMO channel formed by the Nj transmit antennas and the NR receive antennas may be decomposed into Nc spatial channels, where N^ 061058 typically performed by sending pilot from each terminal and measuring the pilot at the base station. The pilot is made up of symbols that are known a priori by both the terminal and the base station. The base station can thus estimate the channel response for each terminal based on the pilot symbols received from that terminal and the known pilot symbols. Since pilot transmission represents overhead, it is desirable to minimize pilot transmission to the extent possible. However, the pilot transmission should be such that the base station can obtain a good channel estimate for each terminal. [0006] There is therefore a need in the art for techniques to send pilot such that a good channel estimate may be derived. SUMMARY [0007] Techniques for transmitting pilot and for processing received pilot to obtain channel and interference estimates are described herein. A transmitter (e.g., a terminal) may generate pilot symbols for a first cluster in a time frequency block (or tile) based on a first sequence and may generate pilot symbols for a second cluster in the time frequency block based on a second sequence. The transmitter may further generate pilot symbols for a third cluster in the time frequency block based on the first sequence or a third sequence and may generate pilot symbols for a fourth cluster in the time frequency block based on the second sequence or a fourth sequence. Each cluster may cover a group of pilot symbols, typically adjacent to one another, in the time frequency block. The first, second, third and fourth sequences may include common elements airanged in different orders and may be considered as different versions of a single sequence. For example, the elements in the second sequence may be in a reverse order (or flipped) with respect to the elements in the first sequence. The transmitter may transmit the pilot symbols in their respective clusters in the time frequency block. [0008] Multiple transmitters may share the time frequency block and may be assigned different sequences that are orthogonal to one another for each cluster in the time frequency block. Each transmitter may generate pilot symbols for each cluster based on the sequence assigned to that transmitter for that cluster. [0009] A receiver (e.g., a base station) may obtain received pilot symbols from multiple clusters in the time frequency block. The receiver may form multiple basis vectors for a transmitter, with each basis vector being formed with multiple versions of a sequence assigned to that transmitter. A basis vector is a vector of elements used for processing received symbols. The multiple versions of the sequence may correspond to 061058 different orderings of the elements in the sequence and may be considered as different sequences. The receiver may form the multiple basis vectors further based on a paiticular charmel model, e.g., a channel model with linearly varying time component and linearly varying frequency component. The receiver may process the received pilot symbols with the multiple basis vectors to obtain a channel estimate for the transmitter. The receiver may repeat the same processing (e.g., the generation of the basis vectors and the processing of the received pilot symbols with the basis vectors) for each transmitter sharing the time frequency block. The receiver may also obtain a noise and interference estimate based on the received pilot symbols and at least one basis vector not used for channel estimation. DETAILED DESCRIPTION [0020] The techniques described herein may be used for various communication systems that support MIMO transmission and utilize a form of frequency division multiplexing (FDM). For example, the techniques may be used for systems that utilize orthogonal FDM (OFDM), single-carrier FDM (SC-FDM), etc. OFDM and SC-FDM partition the system bandwidth into multiple (K) orthogonal subcamers, which are also referred to as tones, bins, etc. Each subcarrier may be modulated with data. In general, 061058 modulation symbols are sent in the frequency domain with OFDM and in the time domain with SC-FDM. The techniques may also be used for transmissions on the reverse link (or uplink) as well as the forward link (or downlink). For clarity, the techniques are described below for transmissions on the reverse link. [0021] FIG. 1 shows a block diagram of a design of two terminals 1 lOx and 1 lOy and a base station 150 in a wireless communication system. A terminal may also be referred to as a user equipment (UE), a mobile station, an access terminal, a subscriber unit, a station, etc. A terminal may be a cellular phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a wireless communication device, a handheld device, a wireless modem, a laptop computer, a cordless phone, etc. A base station may also be referred to as a Node B, an evolved Node B (eNode B), an access point, etc. In FIG. 1, terminal UjOx is. equipped with a single antenna, temiinal llOy is equipped with multiple antennas, and base station 150 is equipped with multiple antennas. Each antenna may be a physical antemia or an antenna array. For simplicity, FIG. 1 shows only processing unitS;fer dat^ transmission on the reverse link and signaling transmission on the forward link. {C022J At each terminal 110. a transmit (TX) data and pilot processor 120 may receive traffic data irom a data source 112, process (e.g., format, encode, interleave, and symbol map) the traffic data, and generate data s}'mbols. Processor 120 may also generate and multiplex pilot symbols with the data symbols. As used herein,, a data symbol is a symbol for data, a pilot symbol is a symbol for pilot, and a symbol is typically a complex value. The data symbols and pilot symbols may be modulation symbols from a modulation scheme such as PSK or QAM. Pilot is data that is known a priori by both the terminals and the base station. [0023] At terminal llOy, a TX MIMO processor 122y may perform transmitter spatial processing on the data and pilot symbols based on direct MIMO mapping, precoding, beamforming, etc. A data symbol may be sent from one antenna for direct MIMO mapping or from multiple antennas for precoding and beamforming. Processor 122y may provide Ny streams of output symbols to Ny modulators (MOD) 130a through 130ny. At terminal 11 Ox, processor 120x may provide a single output symbol stream to a modulator 130x. Each modulator 130 may perform modulation (e.g., for OFDM, SC-FDM, etc.) on the output symbols to obtain output chips. Each modulator 130 may further process (e.g., convert to analog, filter, amplify, and upconvert) its output chips to generate a reverse link signal. At terminal 11 Ox, a single reverse link signal from modulator 130x may be transmitted from antenna 132x. At terminal 11 Oy, 061058 NY reverse link signals from modulators 130a through 130ny may be transmitted via NY antennas 132a through 132ny, respectively. [0024] At base station 150, NR antennas 152a through 152nr may receive the reverse link signals from terminals 1 lOx and 1 lOy and possibly other terminals. Each antenna 152 may provide a received signal to a respective demodulator (DEMOD) 154. Each demodulator 154 may process (e.g., filter, amplify, downconvert, and digitize) its received signal to obtain samples and may further perform demodulation (e.g., for OFDM, SC-FDM, etc.) on the samples to obtain received symbols. Each demodulator 154 may provide received data symbols to a receive (RX) spatial processor 160 and may provide received pilot symbols to a channel processor 162. Channel processor 162 may estimate the response of the wireless channel from each terminal 110 to base station 150 as well as noise and interference based on the received pilot symbols. RX spatial processor 160 may perform MIMO detection on the received data symbols with channel estimates and noise and interference estimates fram-channel processor 162 to obtain data symbol estimates. An RX data processor 170 may process (e.g., deinterleave and decc [0026] Controllers/processors 140x, 140y, and 180 may control the operation of various processing units at terminals llOx and llOy and base station 150, respectively. Memories 142x, 142y, and 182 may store data and program codes for terminals 11 Ox and llOy and base station 150, respectively. A scheduler 184 may schedule terminals for transmission on the forward and/'or reverse link. [0027] FIG. 2 shows a tile structure 200 that may be used for the forward and/or reverse link. The time frequency resources available for a given link may be partitioned into tiles, which may also be referred to as time frequency blocks, resource blocks, hop regions, etc. Each tile may cover multiple (F) subcarriers in multiple (T) symbol periods, where F and T may each be any integer value. The F subcarriers in a given tile 061058 may be consecutive subcarriers or may be distributed across the K total subcarriers. Each tile includes F-T resource units, where a resource unit is one subcarrier in one symbol period. F-T modulation symbols may be sent in the F-T resource units in each tile. Each tile may be assigned to one or more terminals for data transmission. [0028] FIG. 2 also shows a frequency hopping scheme that may be used for the foi-ward and/or reverse link. Frequency hopping may provide frequency diversity against deleterious path effects and randomization of interference. With frequency hopping, a terminal may be assigned tiles in different parts of the system bandwidth in different hop periods. A hop period is the time duration of one tile and spans T symbol periods. [0029] Data and pilot ma/be sent in various maimers in a tile. In one design, data and pilot symbols are sent in different resource units. The pilot symbols may also be sent based on a pilot pattern that indicates specific resource units to use for the pilot symbols. In general, 'Cpilot pattern may include any number of pilot symbols, and the pilot symbols may be located anywhere within a tile. The number of pilot symbols may be ?eiecied hai-ed en a tradeoff between pilot overhead and channel estimation performance. The spacing of the pilot symbols across frequency may be selected based cri expected delay spread of the wireless channel. Smaller freqi'.ency separation between pilot symbols hiay be used to handle larger delay spread. The spacing of the pilot symbols across time may be selected based on expected Doppler spread of the wireless channel. Smaller time separation between pilot symbols may be used to handle larger Doppler spread. [0030] The pilot symbols may also be placed to support spatial multiplexing techniques such as MIMO and/or Spatial Division Multiple Access (SDMA). With spatial multiplexing, multiple data streams may be transmitted simultaneously via multiple spatial channels or layers formed by multiple transmit antennas and multiple receive antermas. To support spatial multiplexing, the pilot symbols may be arranged in clusters within a tile. The number of pilot symbols (M) in each cluster may be equal to or larger than the spatial rank to be supported. Spatial rank refers to the number of spatial charmels, and hence the number of data streams that may be transmitted in parallel. The pilot symbols in each cluster may occupy a contiguous region in time and frequency such that, for each terminal, the variations of the wireless channel across the pilot symbols in one cluster are as small as possible. 061058 [0031] FIG. 3A shows a design of a pilot pattern 310 for a 16x8 tile that covers F = 16 subcarriers in T = 8 symbol periods. In this design, the tile includes 12 pilot symbols that are arranged in four clusters located at four comers of the tile. The four clusters may be given indices of 1, 2, 3 and 4, as shown in FIG. 3A. Each cluster includes M = 3 pilot symbols sent on one subcarrier in three consecutive symbol periods. The three pilot symbols in each cluster may be used for channel estimation for up to three spatial channels. [0032] FIG. 3B shows a design of a pilot pattern 320 for a 16x8 tile. In this design, the tile includes 12 pilot symbols that are arranged in four clusters located at four comers of the tile. Each cluster includes M = 3 pilot symbols sent on three consecutive subcarriers in one symbol period. The three pilot symbols in each cluster may be used for channel estimation for up to three spatial channels. [0033] FIG. 3C shows a design of a pilot pattem 330 for a 16x8 tile. In this design, the tile includes 16 pilot symbols that are arranged in four clusters located at four corners of the tile. Each cluster includes M = 4 pilot symbols sent on two consecutive subcarriers in two consecutive symbol periods. The four pilot symbols in each cluster may be used for channel estimation for up to four spatial channels. [0034] FIG. 3D shows a design of a pilot pattem 340 for a 16x8 tile. In this design, the tile includes 24 pilot symbols that are arranged in eight clusters located in four rows of the tile. Each cluster includes M = 3 pilot symbols sent on one subcarrier in three consecutive symbol periods. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first and second sequences include common elements arranged in different orders. 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the elements in the second sequence * are in a reverse order with respect to the elements in the first sequence. 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the pilot symbols in the second cluster are symmetric with respect to the pilot symbols in the first cluster about a center of the time frequency block. 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to generate pilot symbols for a third cluster in the time frequency block based on the first sequence, and to generate pilot symbols for a fourth cluster in the time frequency block based on the second sequence. 061058 26 6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to generate M pilot symbols for the first cluster based on M elements in the first sequence, and to generate M pilot symbols for the second cluster based on M elements in the second sequence, where M is an integer greater thanone. 9. The apparatus of claim the first sequence is assigned to a terminal and is orthogonal to at least one other sequence assigned to at least one other terminal for the first cluster. 10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first and second sequences are assigned to a terminal, wherein the first sequence is orthogonal to a first set of at least one other sequence assigned to at least one other terminal for the first cluster, and wherein the second sequence is orthogonal to a second set of at least one other sequence assigned to the at least one other terminal for the second cluster. 11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first sequence includes elements in a column of a Fourier matrix. 12. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first and second sequences each include three elements used to generate three pilot symbols for one cluster. 13. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first and second sequences each include four elements used to generate four pilot symbols for one cluster. 14. A method comprising: 061058 27 generating pilot symbols for a first cluster in a time frequency block based on a first sequence; and generating pilot symbols for a second cluster in the time frequency block based on a second sequence. 15. The method of claim 14, wherein the first and second sequences include common elements arranged in different orders. 16. The method of claim 14, further comprising: generating pilot symbols for a third cluster in the time frequency block based on the first sequence; and generating pilot symbols for a fourth cluster in the time frequency block based on the second sequence. 17. The method of claim 14, further comprising: getierating pilot symbols for a third cluster in the time frequency block based on a third sequence; and generating pilot symbols for a fourth cluster in the time frequency block based on a fourth sequence-. 18. The method of claim 14, wherein the first and second sequences are assigned to a terminal, wherein the first sequence is orthogonal to a first set of at least one other sequence assigned to at least one other terminal for the first cluster, and wherein the second sequence is orthogonal to a second set of at least one other sequence assigned to the at least one other terminal for the second cluster. 19. An apparatus comprising: means for generating pilot symbols for a first cluster in a time frequency block based on a first sequence; and means for generating pilot symbols for a second cluster in the time frequency block based on a second sequence. 20. The apparatus of claim 19, fijrther comprising: 061058 28 means for generating pilot symbols for a third cluster in the time frequency block based on the first sequence; and means for generating pilot symbols for a fourth cluster in the time frequency block based on the second sequence. 21. The apparatus of claim 19, further comprising: means for generating pilot symbols for a third cluster in the time frequency block based on a third sequence; and means for generating pilot symbols for a fourth cluster in the time frequency block based on a fourth sequence. 22. A processor-readable medium including instructions stored thereon, comprising: a first instruction set for generating pilot symbols for a^first cluster in a time frequency block based on a first sequence; and a second instruction set for generating pilot symbols for a second cluster in the time frequency block based on a second sequence. 23. An apparatus comprising: a processor configured to obtain received pilot symbols from multiple clusters in a time frequency block, to form each of multiple basis vectors with multiple versions of a sequence assigned to a transmitter, and to process the received pilot symbols with the multiple basis vectors; and a memory coupled to ihe processor. 24. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the multiple versions of the sequence correspond to different brderings of elements in the sequence. 25. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the processor is configured to form each basis vector based on an original version and a flipped version of the sequence. 26. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the processor is configured to form each basis vector based on four versions of the sequence used to generate pilot symbols 061058 29 for the multiple clusters, the pilot symbols being symmetric about a center of the time frequency block. 27. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the processor is configured to form the multiple basis vectors further based on a channel model with linearly varying time component and linearly varying frequency component. 28. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the processor is configured to obtain multiple complex values based on dot products of the received pilot symbols with the multiple basis vectors, and to derive a charmel estimate for the transmitter based on the multiple complex values. 29. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the multiple complex values comprise a first complex value: in4icative of an average channel gain for the time frequency block. 30. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the multiple complex values comprise a second complex value indicative of channel variation across frequency and a third complex value indicative of channel variation across time. 31. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the processor is configured to obtain at least one complex value based on dot product of the received pilot symbols with at least one other basis vector, and to derive a noise and interference estimate based on the at least one complex value. 32. A method comprising: obtaining received pilot symbols from multiple clusters in a time frequency block; forming each of multiple basis vectors with multiple versions of a sequence assigned to a transmitter; and processing the received pilot symbols with the multiple basis vectors. 33. The method of claim 32, wherein the multiple versions of the sequence coiTCspond to different orderings of elements in the sequence. 061058 30 34.
