Full Text | The invention relates to an apparatus for controlling the gap between a casting nozzle and the tyre surface of a rotating drum in a metal film casting machine. Thin metal film casting is carried out through a ceramic casting nozzle attached to a casting furnace containing molten metal. The molten metal cast through a slit in the casting nozzle is received on a tyre surface of a rotating drum. The properties of the cast metal film depends upon various factors. One of the important factors, which decides the quality of the metal film is the gap between the casting nozzle and the surface of the rotating drum. It was found that the gap between the casting nozzle and the surface of the rotating drum can be measured and controlled by providing compressed air of predetermined pressure to the casting nozzle, allowing the air to jet out vertically on the surface of the casting drum and measuring the change in the air pressure due to back pressure by means of pressure transducers. The output signal from the pressure transducers are used as feed back to operate servo motors attached to the casting machine to maintain the required gap between the casting nozzle and the surface of the rotating drum. Two air inlets are provided on the vertical sides of the casting nozzle and two air outlets are provided on the surface facing the surface of the rotating drum, symmetrically near the ends of the slit through which the casting is carried out. The invention provides an apparatus for controlling the gap between a casting nozzle and tyre surface of a rotating drum in a metal film, casting machine for continuously casting a metal foil said apparatus comprising a ceramic casting nozzle having a casting slit attached through a gate valve to bottom opening of a casting furnace and a rotating drum having a polished tyre surface to receive the cast metal, characterised in that, the casting nozzle is provided with a pair of air passages, each having an air inlet and an air outlet, the said air inlets being located on two vertical sides of the casting nozzle and the said air outlets being located close to both ends of the casting slit symmetrically, compressed air supply means being provided to each of said air inlets through a pressure regulator and a pressure sensor to provide a control signal corresponding to the gap between the nozzle and the tyre surface of the rotating drum. The apparatus for controlling the gap between a casting nozzle and the surface of a rotating drum in a metal film casting machine according to the invention is described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. Figure 1 shows the apparatus according to the invention. Figure 2 shows the ceramic casting nozzle. The apparatus according to the invention comprises a ceramic casting nozzle (2) provided with a casting slit (10) and a pair of air passages (9) with air inlets (6) on vertical sides of the said casting nozzle (2) and a pair of air outlets (7) one each on both ends of the casting slit (10) and parallel to the casting slit (10). Each air inlets are connected to compressed air through a pressure sensor (3) and a pressure regulator (8). The compressed air with a predetermined flow pressure is passed through the air passages (9) in the casting nozzle (2). The compressed air, jets out through the air outlet (7) and hit against a tyre surface of a rotating drum (5) with a polished tyre surface. The casting nozzle (2) is attached to the bottom opening of a casting furnace (1) through a gate valve (4). Depending upon the gap between the casting nozzle (2) and the tyre surface of the rotating drum (5) a back pressure is developed and it is sensed by the pressure sensors (3). The pressure sensor (3) preferably comprises pressure transducers. The signal from the pressure sensors (3) are used as the control signal for controlling the gap between the casting nozzle (2) and the tyre surface of the rotating drum (5). The control signal from the sensors (3) correspond to the gap between the casting nozzle (2) and the tyre surface of the rotating drum (5). Therefore these control signals are used with preferably servomotors to adjust the gap between the nozzle and the tyre surface by the relative movement of the casting furnace (1) and the rotating drum (5). The apparatus can be used very effectively to control the quality of cast metal foil from magnetic material using a continuous casting machine. The gap between the casting nozzle and the tyre surface of the rotating drum in a casting machine may be continuously monitored and controlled using this apparatus for obtaining metal foil with uniform thickness and other physical properties. WE CLAIM : 1. An apparatus for controlling the gap between a casting nozzle and tyre surface of a rotating drum in a metal film casting machine for continuously casting a metal foil said apparatus comprising a ceramic casting nozzle (2) having a casting slit (10) attached through a gate valve (4) to bottom opening of a casting furnace (1) and a rotating drum (5) having a polished tyre surface to receive the cast metal, characterised in that, the casting nozzle (2) is provided with a pair of air passages (9), each having an air inlet (6) and an air outlet (7), the said air inlets (6) being located on two vertical sides of the casting nozzle (2) and the said air outlets (7) being located close to both ends of the casting slit (10) symmetrically, compressed air supply means being provided to each of said air inlets (6) through a pressure regulator (8) and a pressure sensor (3) to provide a control signal corresponding to the gap between the nozzle (2) and the tyre surface of the rotating drum (5). 2. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pressure sensors (3) comprises pressure transducers to provide output signal to control servo motor. 3.
