FIELD OF INVENTION
The invention relates to a universal connector for compact electrical equipment.
More particularly, the invention relates to a universal connector for metal-clad
compact gas insulated substation equipment.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
Connectors are primarily used for linking or branching current in an electrical
system. These are links between one module / element / sub assembly to
another module /element / sub assembly of electrical substation equipment.
Connector profile shall be commensurate to the application for reliable operation.
To form any required circuit configurations and to provide flexibility in circuit
formation, connectors are essential in substation equipment. Profiled connectors
are used in compact switchgear due to constraint of critical stresses and
equipment dimensions. The basic design philosophy of these connectors is be
aimed at providing stress-relieved connections between high voltage sections of
the subject compact switchgear equipment. Application specific connections are
in use so far.
Conventionally, connectors of different profiles with various orientations are used
based on their application, in modules of metal-clad gas insulated substation. In
general, connectors in gas insulated / hybrid / compact type switchgear have the
following applications:

3
1. Straight electrical connection within module to extend lengths of bus bar.
2. In-line connection / assembly of two different modules.
3. Angular - connection of two different modules / connection in different
orientations (90°, 60°, 30° etc.).
4. Housings for elements of switching modules like circuit breaker,
disconnector, earth switches etc.
5. Other than specified above - like end shields, thermal sink / radiator etc.
As shown in figure - 1, generally different connectors such as branching (T-type)
,angular ( L-type) and straight (in-line) are used for metal-clad applications.
Three different geometries and set of accessories are essential for realizing
intended application. Conventional connection requires additional space for their
placement; results in increased dimensions of substation equipment.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
The present invention will now be described with the help of the accompanying
drawings, where:
Figure 1: Shows the conventional connectors.
Figure 2: Shows a first embodiment of a Universal Connector adaptable in a
compact electrical equipment.
Figure 3: Shows a second embodiment of the Universal Connector according to
the invention.
DETAIL DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The spherical connector (01) according to the invention constitutes a unique
component designed to cater to multiple requirements in compact switchgear
equipment. The size of the connectors (01) is corresponding to the rated voltage,
current and power. The materials of the connector (01) are high purity
conducting metals and alloys. As shown in figure 3, apart from a hollow spherical

7
shaped body (B), the connector (01) features at least two plane seating area (S1,
S2) for placement and bolting of the intended connection (c). The seatings (S1,
S2) are flat with circular cross section. The seatings (S1, S2) are machined to
desired orientations of the connection (c) using accurate 3-D machining / milling
equipment. Sharp intersections of the connector (01) and the connection (c) are
beveled to match each other.
The first requirement of in-line connection is met by said two parallel seatings
(Si, S2) which provide the connections in the connector (01). Minimum distance
between the seatings (Si, S2) reduces the path length and hence results in a low
resistance connection. The spherical shape of the connector (01) helps in
relieving electrical stresses.
For angular connections (including "L", "T" or 0°-90° of any orientation), as
shown in figure - 2, the seatings (S3, S4) are machined to desired angles in order
to realize the desired orientation of the connections. Multiple connections (c) as
in case of double bus systems are also possible at different connection angles
using the connector (01). The spherical connector (01) in such cases also
provides low resistance path with controlled electrical stress in its vicinity.
A housing (H) of the connector (01) accommodates contacts of switching
elements (02), for example, fixed or movable contact (03) replacing the bolting
means as described herein above in case of the first application. The spherical
connector profile relieves electrical stresses in such configurations (refer Fig. 3).
When used as a current collector (04), the bore (b) of the connector (01) is used
for housing current collection elements with/without intermediate component

8
(not shown). This results in a reduced contact resistance and heat dissipation
from the device.
The spherical connector (01) is utilized as an effective supporting element and a
guide to the insulating and conducting drive components of switching elements
(02). The profile of the spherical connector (01) and commonality of use helps in
configurating a cost-effective compact switchgear equipment.
In terminal mode, the connector (01) with one seating (S1) is an electrically
stress relieved terminal.
Finally the high cooling surface area provided by the hollow spherical connector
(01), is an effective heat radiation / conduction device in the metal-clad
equipment. The application helps in reducing temperature and improves
temperature profile of the subject switchgear equipment.
The universal connector facilitates multiple connecting options (refer Fig. 3), and
relieves electrical and thermal stress in metal-clad gas insulated power
equipment.
The connector of the invention is a modular spherical connector and the flat
seating are for termination.
The connector is adaptable for multiple functions including static and dynamic
transfer of current and branching of current of switchgear equipment.
The connector restores electrical stress in vicinity.

9
The connector can be used as the base for contact system of the switching
elements.
The connector is self contained and acts as an electrically stress relieved end
shield.
The surface of the connector improves temperature distribution in metal-clad gas
insulated power equipment.
